Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

ChatGPT is now a brilliant tool for winding up telemarketers and scammers

If there’s one thing most people on the internet can agree on is we all hate those annoying telemarketing scams calling us at all hours of the day. Software developer Roger Anderson decided to fight fire with fire as he recently equipped his robotic voice service with OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model to fool them into wasting time.

And the best part is you can get in on it.

Anderson’s service is called Jolly Roger Telephone which sells AI personalities to engage in ridiculous conversations with scammers. A recent Wall Street Journal report details one of these engagements where a telemarketer claiming to be from Bank of America called a potential mark only to be answered by Whitey Whitebeard, one of the AIs. Whitey, as a character, has a habit of speaking in circles. The AI was so effective at its job the scammer eventually hung up out of sheer exhaustion about six minutes into the call.

How it all works

The Wall Street Journal states Jolly Roger Telephone has been around for almost a decade. However when ChatGPT launched late 2022, Anderson saw an opportunity to upgrade his service. He claims GPT-4 “does a pretty good job of saying dumb things that are somewhat funny” to keep caller engaged.

The way the service works, according to the report, is, when a scammer calls, the AI proceeds to “[stall] for time at the start” by saying a bunch of absurdities. It does this to give GPT-4 some time to process what it hears before generating responses. Once done, the text is then “fed into a voice cloner” where the digital personality proceeds to have a ridiculous conversation.

Customers can connect either a landline or mobile phone number to one of the AIs. Personalities include Whitey Whitebeard as mentioned earlier; Salty Sally, a distracted, scatterbrained mother; and Whiskey Jack who often goes into non-sequiturs. Demos are available on Jolly Roger’s website. Be warned: some of the samples have scammers get so angry they begin throwing out expletives so listen with some headphones on. Users will also be given a choice of two numbers – one will record the call while the other won’t.

Availability

Jolly Roger Telephone is available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and NewZealand. People in the United States get access to 10 robot voices while everyone else gets six. A subscription costs only $1.99 a month. Once you’re in, Jolly Roger Telephone will take you through a multi-step process involving convincing your phone company to allow the service onto your connection as well as whitelisting the numbers of those in your contacts list.

We reached out to Jolly Roger for information on what kind of voice cloner the company uses plus prices in other countries. This story will be updated if and when we hear back from the company.

Truth be told, these personalities are shockingly lifelike. They’re not perfectly human, but the combination of GPT-4 alongside the voice cloner gets pretty close to a real voice. Listen to Jolly Roger’s demos and you can easily see how these scammers got fooled.

As funny as the AI personalities may be, we recommend getting more robust protection for your personal information. Be sure to check out TechRadar’s guide of the best identity theft protection software for 2023

A free update to WiiMs cheap wireless high-res music streamer adds a great feature found on expensive streamers

At just $149 (£149 / around AU$225) the WiiM Pro is an inexpensive music streamer that packs the kind of feature set you’d expect to see on streamers priced much higher. That fact alone makes it an incredible value, but the company has just announced that the WiiM Pro has received Roon Ready certification – a feature typically found on the kind of high-end audio components with stratospheric pricing.

In our WiiM Pro review, we found it to be an excellent option for adding not just high-res streaming capability to an existing speaker system, but also for wireless multi-room streaming capability. Same as with a Sonos setup, this lets you listen to tracks from the best music streaming services on a single system, or play them across multiple systems with everything managed by an easy to use control app.

Roon interface shown on various device screens

Roon's extensive metadata makes listening to music a multi-media experience (Image credit: Roon Labs)

What Roon Ready certification adds to the mix is the ability to use the WiiM Pro as an endpoint for Roon’s sophisticated music management and playback software. If you’re not familiar with Roon, here’s how it’s described in WiiM’s press release announcing the update:

“Roon is a rich and engaging way to browse, organize and listen to music. Artist photos, credits, bios, reviews, lyrics, tour dates and composers are located automatically, then interconnected by links to build a surfable digital magazine. Through Roon Ready, the WiiM Pro offers a multi-room, multi-user networked audio platform featuring bit-perfect playback, DSD and PCM upsampling, multichannel support and Signal Path display.”

You can buy a Roon Ready version of the WiiM Pro now on Amazon. And if you already happen to own a WiiM Pro, you will receive a notification prompting you to upgrade to the latest version of its software to enable the feature.

Analysis: Roon Ready certification makes a great, affordable streamer even better

I’ve been using the WiiM Pro as the streamer in my speaker system for a few months now, and I'm impressed with how good it sounds for the money. I’m equally impressed that it lets me access Spotify, Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music Unlimited, Pandora, Deezer, TuneIn radio and more directly from its control app without having to launch any of those services individually.

Roon works in similar fashion, aggregating high-res-compatible services like Tidal and Qobuz along with internet radio stations and music files stored locally on your network. And it presents everything in a visually stunning app that you can use to control playback from on your phone, tablet, or computer.

Not only that, but Roon’s extensive metadata offers up artist biographies, discographies, song credits, and much more to browse while listening. And it also has an almost frighteningly accurate discovery and recommendation engine, one that puts other streaming music apps to shame.

WiiM Pro’s characterization of it as a “surfable digital magazine” is completely spot-on – you don't just listening to music when using Roon; you experience it as a multi-media presentation.

As a Roon user, I’m used to making do with that software’s AirPlay support to stream music to devices like the WiiM Pro and the Apple TV 4K. And while AirPlay works fine, you’re not able to take advantage of Roon’s high-res audio compatibility since Apple’s wireless streaming protocol limits resolution to a CD-level quality.

With the WiiM Pro getting upgraded to Roon Ready status, I can now stream music wirelessly in high-res format from Tidal and Qobuz via Roon, which should make an appreciable difference when listening with the best stereo speakers. In some instances you’ll pay thousands of dollars for that privilege. With the upgraded WiiM Pro, however, it will cost a mere $149.

WhatsApp just made transferring chat history so easy but there may be one big limit

WhatsApp is making it easier to transfer chat logs from your old phone to a new one just by scanning a QR code.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the initial announcement on his Instagram channel where he states this method lets you move your data privately without ever having to leave your devices.” Looking at the video he posted, you first open up the QR code on the older device, then scan said code on the newer phone. Give it about 10 seconds to finish up and you’re done. Other reports state the Chat Transfer tool can be found under the Chats section in the Settings menu.

Compared to the old method of having to back up your history on either Google Drive or iCloud, this is a lot more straightforward. You’re effectively cutting out the middleman plus you don’t have to worry about hitting storage limits if your WhatsApp account has several gigabytes worth of media saved on it.

As great as this new feature may be, it appears there is a catch. TheVerge claims the QR code chat log transfer “only works between devices running the same operating system, so Android to Android or iOS to iOS.” If you want to move your data from, say, a Samsung Galaxy phone to an iPhone or vice versa, you’ll have to head over to WhatsApp’s Help Center for instructions on how to do so.

We asked Meta to confirm if this is true. We’ll update this story at a later time.

Availability

Meta is currently rolling out the Chat Transfer tool in waves to all its users. Be sure to keep an eye out for the patch once it arrives. No word if there are plans to add a similar feature to the desktop version of WhatsApp.

If any of this sounds familiar to you, that’s because WABetaInfo first revealed the update back in early May when it was only available to beta testers. The publication has since shown off other interesting changes coming to WhatsApp. For instance, a WhatsBeta beta on Android from late May introduces screen-sharing for video calls, which you can activate right after installation and try out with others. There are also plans to introduce multi-account support to the platform giving people a way to swap between profiles on the same smartphone.

While we have you, be sure to check out TechRadar's list of the best secure smartphones for June 2023.

Microsoft's new AI shopping tools will create a buying guide just for you

Online shopping can be difficult as you’ll have to sift through a ton of information before finding the right product for you. Microsoft aims to take some of that busy work out by introducing some, naturally, AI-powered shopping tools to Bing and Edge.

In total, there are three. First, you have Buying Guides, which as you can probably guess from the name, has Bing write up a literal buying guide telling you what to look for according to a certain category. The AI will show “specifications of multiple, similar items next to each other” on a table so you can easily compare your options without having to jump around a thousand different websites. It’ll even make some suggestions on what you should purchase.

Microsoft claims Buying Guides are already available on Bing Chat in the United States, however, when we checked, it wasn't as widespread as we had hoped. It was able to create a guide for college supplies like in the video above, but when we asked the AI to make something for gaming headphones, nothing new came up. It was still the old version of Bing where you have to do a lot of the legwork yourself. It appears the update is releasing in waves.

Later on in the year, Microsoft plans on launching the tool internationally. As for Edge, its rendition of Buying Guides is “starting to roll out worldwide”. Be sure to keep an eye out for the patch when it arrives.

Price tracking

Next is Review Summaries to help you decide between two products you’re interested in. What it does is grab information from reviews to then “briefly summarize what people are saying about it online” through Bing's chatbot. Microsoft states the tool will “provide a quick look at top insights and popular opinions about [a] product”, all in an effort to save you a ton of time. The feature is currently rolling out to all global regions.

The final tool is Price Match, which will monitor an item’s price tag over time and then help you request a retailer match the new number “if it drops.” To make this helpful tool possible, the company partnered up with US retailers that already have price match policies in place. We don’t know the companies honoring the feature apart from Microsoft itself. Interestingly enough, there are plans to have more retailers honor the policy down the line.

Microsoft says Price Match will soon launch exclusively in the United States. It’s unknown if there are plans to expand this tool internationally. We reached out to Microsoft for more information regarding a global rollout plus if it can tell us the retailers honoring Price Match. We’ll update this story at a later time.

As good as these shopping tools may seem, be sure to stay vigilant when dealing with generative AIs. They can’t totally be trusted as chatbots are “prone to spewing out misinformation”. We're not saying Bing's Buying Guides tool will lie or make up information, but the chance does exist. Developers like OpenAI are working on ways to stop hallucinations from appearing in their tech. However, sometimes, you just can’t beat the human touch.

Use these tools as a backup to guides written by real people. Speaking of which, check out TechRadar’s recently updated list of the best PCs you can buy for 2023.

Sony just gave the worlds best vlogging camera two big free upgrades

In our full Sony ZV-E1 review, we described the flagship full-frame mirrorless model as ‘the most capable vlogging camera’ available and it’s in our best vlogging camera guide. Now, via a free upgrade, it just got even better.

Sony has rolled out a significant upgrade – it’s not a firmware update but an upgrade license – that simply adds 4K / 120 video (Long GOP compression), and 1080 / 240 video to the camera's S&Q (slow motion / quick motion) mode.

The 1080 / 240 addition is a 10x slow motion video effect and will provide greater versatility in post for creative speed ramping effects, and slowing down fast-paced action where it's otherwise hard to take in the details.

The ZV-E1 was already the most powerful vlogging camera available that is a trailblazer in how AI is transforming how our cameras work, with auto-tracking features that make life easier for modest film crews.

It is also the cheapest way to get the stellar 4K sensor that is found in the significantly more expensive Sony A7S III. And now, thanks to this upgrade, the ZV-E1 matches the max 4K video frame rate of its pricier sibling.

We knew the update was coming when the ZV-E1 was launched – Sony publicly said so – and now that day has come. We've shared below how you can upgrade your ZV-E1 with these new video record modes.

How do I update my ZV-E1?

The ZV-E1 license is obtained via Sony Creators’ Cloud for which you need an account, but there is no charge for the updated license.

If you’d rather not create an account, you can upgrade your ZV-E1 without signing in through a three-step process that requires your camera's 7-digit serial number, and you’ll need a memory card to download the license file and transfer it to your camera.

Once you've inserted the memory card containing the license file into your camera, on-screen instructions will guide you through the rest of the process.

New Safari 17 preview lets you try out the browser before it hits macOS Sonoma

Apple is giving more people the opportunity to try out Safari 17 before it launches on macOS Sonoma as it has recently released Safari Technology Preview 173.

Up to this point, the only way people could use the revamped Safari was to install the Sonoma beta onto their Mac. With this preview, Ventura users can now see what all the fuss is about without having to commit to downloading the beta.

There are, however, restrictions. Safari 17 on Ventura excludes some of the more impactful changes in the update leaving the browser with mostly developer tools. The preview introduces Live Text support to recognize vertical text in images and videos. A tweaked Responsive Design Mode will further enhance the responsiveness of a webpage. Then there’s the new Feature Flags section offering easier access to experimental features from Apple.

It appears Safari 17 on Ventura is not the most recent build of the updated browser, which is one reason why users on that system won’t get all of the bells and whistles. If you do want all the bells and whistles, you’ll need to first install the Sonoma beta on your Mac and then upgrade Safari to the 173 preview build.

Exclusive to the Sonoma beta

After installing the build, you’ll get four new features; three of which were first seen during WWDC 2023. You have the long overdue inclusion of Profiles to Safari so people can share their Mac computer with friends or family while maintaining their privacy. Private Browsing on Sonoma will now lock your “windows when not in use” while also adding protection against “advanced techniques used to track” people online. Plus, you’ll be able to add websites to your Mac Dock for instant access.

The only new addition is a “redesigned text cursor” utilizing your system’s accent color. So if your Mac’s accent color is red, the text cursor will be red too. The rest of the 173 preview build consists of either a developer tool or bug fixes, including newfound support for the JPEG XL image and HEIC file formats and addressing videos going black “when exiting picture-in-picture”. Nothing major. No word when the enhanced search function or passkey sharing will arrive in a Safari or Sonoma beta.

Availability

If you’re interested in trying out Safari 17, head on over to Apple’s Developer website and then download the browser that best fits the macOS you’re running. Your computer will walk you through the process. The best part is it’s available to everyone. You don’t need to be a developer to try it out although developers will probably be the ones to get the most out of the build.

9to5Mac states that Safari 17 will be its own standalone app so it won’t replace the main browser. You can uninstall it anytime you want. Also, remember this is a preview build. The final product may look different.

Modders have struck again making an Asus ROG Ally with 4TB of storage

The Asus ROG Ally has only been out since earlier this June 2023, and already the modding community has figured out how to install 4TB of M.2 2280 SSD storage.

Normally the Asus ROG Ally comes with 512GB of storage, with a 256 GB version coming soon. And as impressive as fitting that much in a small package is, it’s not nearly enough for many modern PC games, with some requiring 100 GB or more. Some Redditors have taken matters into their own hands and decided to figure out how to fit in even more storage.

Image 1 of 2

Image 2 of 2

results of a modded Asus ROG Ally

According to these intrepid modders, and reported by VideoGameZ, the ROG Ally can in fact fit a standard M.2 2280 storage but you need to remove part of the chassis to do so. As you may have guessed, this is an irreversible change that will definitely void your warranty, something important to consider since currently every single one of these portables is covered by it. But if you don’t mind, then know you’ll need to remove antennas and insulate said SSD in a non-conductive foil.

It seems that, so far, these mods have been successful, particularly with WD 4TB SN850X storage and Crucial P3 Plus 4TB (CT4000P3PSSD8) storage. None of the modders reported overheating or any performance issues in the two weeks since they started altering their ROG Ally systems.

The Asus ROG Ally has so much potential

One of the most interesting aspects of the Asus ROG Ally is how receptive it seems to be to modding, not only in terms of gaming software modding but also for boosting its all-around performance. If it’s possible to upgrade the handheld to this degree so early in its launch, imagine its modding potential later on down the line when owners truly get a grasp on what they can do with the ROG Ally.

Not to mention that we’ve also seen how much a simple update can improve gaming performance across the board. Ahead of its launch, Asus released a set of firmware and driver updates that increased framerate in many of the best PC games, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and Forza Horizon 5, by up to 20%.

We could end up seeing a ROG Ally, whether officially boosted or warranty-voiding modified, that has specs far superior to what it initially had, which is saying a lot considering what it's packed with already. I’m excited to see what’s possible, considering that it feels like the PC portable has so much untapped potential, as outlined in this Tom’s Guide review.

Save your My Photo Stream pictures before Apple shuts it down

Apple’s My Photo Stream is set to be shut down in less than a month on July 26, 2023, so if you want to locally save any images from the service you don’t have long left.

My Photo Stream was a limited-space cloud storage system that could give you a free taste of what iCloud has to offer you. Your 1,000 most recent snaps would be stored in the cloud for 30 days, allowing you to easily move them between your Apple gadgets. To keep them for longer you need to set up and use iCloud Photos. Because iCloud Photos also has its own free trial which lets you store 5GB of images for free Apple likely feels that My Photo Stream is superfluous – which is probably why it’s going away.

Thankfully, based on how the service works we’d be surprised if you have any pictures only stored in My Photo Stream – so when the service goes away you should still have the snaps you love stored on one of your devices. But just in case you don’t have them saved locally anywhere, or if you want to make sure they’re stored on a specific device, we’ve got a guide to help you out. Whether you use an iPad, iPhone, iPod, or a Mac here’s how to save your My Photo Stream pictures.

How to save your photos from My Photo Stream

On iPhone and iPod touch

  • Start by opening your Photos app and tap on Albums at the bottom of your screen.

  • Here you’re looking for the My Photo Stream album. As a default iOS album it should be one of the first options, but if you have lots of albums you may need to scroll a bit to find it.

  • Once in the My Photo Stream Album, press the Select button in the top right corner of the screen then scroll through the album and tap on every image you want to keep.

  • With all the images you want to save selected, tap on the Share button (the square with an arrow coming from it in the bottom right-hand corner), then press Save Image.

On iPad

  • Open your Photos app, then open the sidebar by tapping on the icon in the top left of your screen. Here you should see My Albums. Tap on this.
  • Look for the My Photo Stream album. It’s a default iOS album so it should appear near the beginning of the list. Scroll through the albums and press it if you see it, but if you don’t then you might not have any My Photo Stream pics to worry about.

  • Once you have the My Photo Stream Album press Select in the top right corner. You can then go through the album and select all the individual images you want to save.
  • Now that you have all the images you want to save selected, tap on the Share button (the square with an arrow coming from it in the bottom right-hand corner), then press Save Image.

On Mac

  • Start by booting up your Mac and opening the Photos app. You’ll then need to go to Albums and open up the My Photo Stream album.
  • Go through and select the images you want to save to your device.
  • Using your mouse, drag the select images from the My Photos Stream album to your library and they’ll be stored locally.

Salesforce: Its time to train workers in how to use AI

A growing number of workers are using AI in their daily working lives, but many say they still aren’t entirely comfortable with how best to use the technology, new research suggests.

A report from CRM software giant Salesforce has found nearly two-thirds of employees in the UK don’t believe they have the skills to use AI accurately or safely.

This is despite over a third (38%) saying that they are either already using, or plan to start using generative AI in their jobs. A large majority are aware, though, of the potentially serious issues involved with it.

AI training

The issues they cite include bias (named by 58%) and inaccuracies (46%) in generative AI outputs, as well as noting that a lack of human contextual knowledge (70%) and human creativity (66%) demonstrate the need for human input and control.

To help address these issues, Salesforce recently unveiled its AI Cloud offering earlier this month, and CEO Marc Benioff stated this would provide, “the fastest and easiest way for our customers to unleash the incredible power of AI.”

The company has also announced a $4 billion investment in the UK over the next five years, supporting its push around innovation, particularly concerning AI and digital transformation.

“This significant investment builds on our long-standing commitment to the UK,” said Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO, Salesforce. “The UK is home to some of the world’s most incredible, innovative companies, and we’re thrilled to work together with them to drive the next wave of digital transformation in this new AI era.”

Research by IDC claims Salesforce and its ecosystem of customers and partners in the UK will create 271,700 new jobs and £52 billion ($66 billion) in new business revenues by 2026.

“As an important global tech hub entering a new, fast-moving innovation cycle led by generative AI, the UK has a golden opportunity to unlock long-lasting value for the economy and grow its status as a technology leader,” said Zahra Bahrololoumi, CEO, Salesforce UKI.

“A clear pro-innovation regulatory framework that compels safe and responsible use of AI is vital, and Salesforce is fully focused on bringing secure, trusted, enterprise ready generative AI to UK businesses.”

Android TVs new Shop tab lets you rent and buy movies just like the old days

Google is introducing a brand new Shop tab to its Android TV platform, giving users a more direct way of purchasing or renting movies.

At a glance, it looks similar to the already existing Discover section since they both display content you can watch. However, Discover requires users to dig through multiple menus, whereas with Shop, you can buy a movie right then and there without needing a subscription to anything. There are some restrictions, however. According to an Android TV Help page, people can only get content from four specific sources: Android TV itself, Google TV, Google Play Movies & TV, and YouTube. There isn’t any support for third-party services like Netflix.

The company goes to say everything you rent or buy can be accessed through your own personal Library found in the Shop tab. You can then watch the movie on your Android TV, or send it to the Google TV mobile app on either your smartphone or tablet for offline viewing.

Over the coming weeks, the update will be making its way to Android TV devices across the United States. Some online reports claim the Shop tab is releasing to 23 other countries; however a full list couldn’t be found. Google also claims select features and content may be excluded in certain regions. We reached out to the tech giant for more information.

This story will be updated at a later time.

Next evolution

Android TV is going through an interesting time as it’s seemingly metamorphosing into Google’s next major content platform.

Last month, it gained over 800 free channels via a new Live tab. People can watch new channels from major outlets to programming from around the world in over 10 different languages. In the future, the tech giant plans on upgrading the software with the launch of Android TV 14. While we don’t know exactly what it’ll contain, a recent beta does give a few clues. It appears Android TV will gain a customizable shortcut feature that can be linked to a specific app or HDMI port on a display. Selecting the shortcut activates the app or device connected to said port.

It's also worth pointing out Google has been removing its Play Movies & TV platform from various platforms. The company killed off the official app on various third-party TVs back in 2021 and even removed it from Google TV last year. In our opinion, we think Google is actually making room for Android TV as it prepares to kill off Play Movies, although we can't say for sure at this moment.

While we have you, be sure to check out TechRadar’s list of the top smart TVs from LG, Samsung, Sony, and more for 2023

Nokia G42 combines repairability and 5G connectivity in a handsome purple package

Hot on the heels of the G22 launch earlier in 2023, Nokia owner HMD Global has announced the Nokia G42 as the next in its series of repairable smartphones. The G42 continues Nokia’s quest to make at-home smartphone repairs simple, accessible and affordable, but the headline feature in this latest release is the inclusion of 5G connectivity (something that was missing on the G22).

Repairable and replaceable parts on the Nokia G42 include the screen, the battery and the charging port and in order to make the G42 repairable – and to provide the parts with which to repair – Nokia has continued its partnership with global repair community iFixit.

Nokia’s intention with the G42 – and its G22 sibling – is to allow owners to keep using their phone as if it were new, long after the included warranty expires.

Aside from its repairable credentials, the Nokia G52 arrives with a 50MP camera, which in tandem with the company’s latest imaging AI technology, aims to deliver clear and detailed pictures that comfortably compete with (or better) phones in a similar price bracket.

Nokia G42 in So Purple

It makes use of the Snapdragon 480 Plus 5G processor – one that’s used in many other affordable phones such as the Motorola Moto G53 5G – which won’t win any awards for outright speed, but crucially, it brings 5G connectivity to customers at a more accessible price point.

While the brand is under new ownership – and has even produced a new-look logo – in true Nokia fashion, the G42 claims to last up to three days on a single charge. The company even says the health of the battery will still be ticking at around 80% after 800 full charging cycles. But of course, even if the health does dwindle, you can easily buy a new one to replace it.

The G42 is available now in the UK for £199 and will arrive in Australia in “late July” for AU$449. There is currently no word on US availability. When we first saw the G22, which retails for less at £150 / AU$349, we felt it could become one of the best cheap phones of 2023, and the same suggestion can certainly be made of Nokia’s latest release. At-home Fix Kits and replacement parts start at AU$42.99 in Australia, while UK pricing is currently unavailable.

It’s available in just the one configuration of 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage, with microSD expansion up to 1TB. In addition to this, the Nokia G42 sports a 6.56-inch HD+ display with 90Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 560 nits with brightness boost. There are two colours to choose from: So Grey and So Purple. Nokia has also promised three years of monthly security updates for the G42, along with two years of OS updates.

Analysis: Is nostalgia the future?

Nokia G42 in So Gray

Cast your mind back (if you're old enough) to the time when Nokia phones were all the rage. We had some wacky designs, interchangeable cases and we'd all be sending songs and ringtones to each other via Bluetooth. It was at this time that batteries were removable and could be replaced easily, should anything have gone wrong.

I personally don't remember having any issues with any Nokia phone I owned, however, and to this day they're still remembered as being some of the toughest things on the planet. Put simply, if you wanted a phone that would last, it had to be a Nokia.

Now under the ownership of HMD Global, the Finnish company is clearly keen to really tap back into Nokia's routes, by offering customers phones that have the potential to last much longer than we've come to expect of the current crop of smartphones.

I'm especially pleased to see that the screen can be replaced at home by following some simple steps. Dropping your phone and cracking the screen is up there with the worst feelings one can feel, largely due to the high cost of having to replace it. With the Nokia G42, you will be able to buy a new screen for AU$89.99 (UK pricing is tbc). That's not a particularly significant amount of money, and is certainly a cost that is easier to stomach than having to spend hundreds more on a new phone.

Not only does the offer of repairability mean the phone can lost longer, but I also think that giving the Average Joe the tools to carry out repairs themselves is pretty cool. It allows us to become more attached to our tech and understand more about what goes into their production.

It would be great to see repairability come to more high-end devices in the future, not only because I think it would have even wider appeal, but reducing the number of smartphones we each own will surely help to reduce the amount of e-waste and then in turn, help the environment.

Mozilla wants Pocket users to switch to Firefox accounts which may not be a bad thing

For years Pocket users have been able to get away with not having a Mozilla Firefox account despite the service being on its browser, but they'll soon have to make the switch.

Starting on July 11, 2023, all Pocket users will be prompted to create a Mozilla Firefox account, and it will become mandatory by August 15, 2023. But according to the official blog post, other than changing how you log in, this will not have any effect on your saved items. Also, if you’re a Pocket Premium subscriber, your subscription will not be affected by this move.

transfer from pocket to firefox

Mozilla stated that this move is to ensure that all users will have Mozilla’s security benefits like two-factor authentication and Mozilla’s privacy policy. And if you log in using your Apple ID or Google login, then not only will you receive these benefits but your account will also be auto-migrated on July 11.

Mozilla’s apps will also be unaffected by the switch, not to mention Pocket will continue to be accessible on other web browsers, including the Pocket browser extension. So, in other words, you’ll have a much more secure browsing experience while maintaining your full breadth of services free of charge.

The full instructions on how to convert your Pocket account to a Mozilla Firefox account are below:

  • Beginning July 11, 2023, if you’re already logged in to Pocket, simply log out to be redirected to the Pocket Log In page.
  • Enter your email and click Next. If you haven’t already set up your Firefox account, you’ll be prompted with instructions. For Pocket users who log in via Apple ID or Google, please see *below.
  • Select Upgrade my account to proceed. (Note: If you select I’m not ready, you will be prompted to transition your account the next time you log in.)
  • Log into your Firefox account or create a new one.
  • You’ll then be redirected to your Pocket content.

Mozilla previously had been asking users to make the transition, Android Police stated, even setting the mandatory conversion date to June 30, 2022. But now it seems that the company has decided to take things more seriously.

These 'air conduction' earbuds let you hear the music and the world around you

Audio brand Shokz is best known for its bone-conduction headphones but for its new OpenFit wireless earbuds, the company is doing something different: air conduction.

One of the problems with bone-conduction headphones is the audio they output isn’t as good quality as a traditional pair of headphones. The sound reproduction isn’t quite the same. Seemingly because of this discrepancy, Shokz is equipping the OpenFit with DirectPitch, a feature that will gauge both the “distance and angle between” the earbuds and a person’s ear in order to deliver high-quality audio. It's the air being vibrated; not the inner ear. The company claims the tech introduces a sound “that perfectly balances bold highs, clear mids, and [a] surging bass".

Additionally, Shokz is throwing in some of its proprietary tech to improve the output even more. You have the OpenBass algorithm to direct “low-frequency vibrations” into the ear canal for better bass, and Dynamic Range Control for automatically adjusting the equalizer “in real-time”. Each bud will also include a lightweight, “18x11mm customized dynamic driver”.

Notable features

Like with other Shokz products, the OpenFit has an open-ear design so people can still hear the world around them even with the volume cranked up. The company also added a flexible ear hook made out of a “dual-layered liquid silicone” to ensure user comfort. Admittedly, not everyone is a fan of open-ear headphones as audio can leak out. However, it looks like Shokz has a solution. Thanks to DirectPitch, the devices will push the sound pressure towards the ear canal allowing listeners “to hear sounds clearly". This also helps reduce sound leakage and ensures privacy.

Other notable features include AI Noise Cancellation for phone calls, a water resistance rating of IP54 so they can survive splashes of water and dust (just don’t go into the pool with them), as well as a battery life (with the charging case) of up to 28 hours. Shokz states “a quick five-minute charge provides one hour of listening time”.

Available in black and beige, you can purchase the OpenFit earbuds from either Shokz’s website or Amazon for $179.95. It’s unknown if they’ll be available globally. We checked the UK and Australian versions of Amazon, but didn’t find any listings apart from the older OpenRun Pro. We asked Shokz if it plans on releasing the OpenFit model outside the United States. This story will be updated at a later time.

In the meantime, check out TechRadar’s recently updated list of the best bone-conduction headphones for 2023.

McAfee Dell team up to help keep your SMB safe

Top antivirus vendor McAfee has created a new all-in-one security solution for small business customers working with Dell.

The new suite, called McAfee Business Protection, protects from various threats, and combines a firewall, dark web data monitoring, VPN, web browsing protection, identity protection and other security features.

McAfee claims the new product helps to protect firms from malware and viruses, as well as being easy to use. Custom policies can also be created, allowing for automated rules to be set up to deal with threats the way you want, without taking up the time of IT teams.

Protection and support for Dell customers

According to its own survey, McAfee found that most small business owners manage their security protections themselves. However, due to their limited time, they spend less than an hour a week managing them, which is concerning; McAfee also cites research showing that small businesses are a prime target for cybercriminals.

“We’re excited to bring McAfee Business Protection to Dell customers so that small business owners can focus on running their company, knowing that their security posture is in safe hands with McAfee and Dell,” said Gagan Singh, Chief Operating Officer at McAfee.

“Our business solution is purpose-built with an easy-to-use and scalable model designed to grow with the business. Customers will benefit from simple but powerful tools that allow customization while offering industry-leading online protection,” they added.

With the security console within McAfee Business Protection, users can view the company's protection status, manage employee policies and take security actions in one place. It is also available as a mobile app.

There is also a business protection score, which assesses the security health of your firm and workers, as well as providing steps to improve scores.

Each employee can set up their own data and device protection, and take security actions themselves.

A track remover can prevent trackers on the web from gathering data about your firm and employees too. 24/7 support is also availble, providing tenchincal assistance via phone or live chat.

For global small business owners that purchase a PC from Dell (Vostro, XPS with Pro OS, OptiPlex, Latitude or Precision), McAfee Business Protection will be available as a 30-day trial or one-year or three-year subscription, starting June 8th, 2023.

Vostro/XPS models include a 1-year subscription to McAfee Business Protection and an optional 3-year paid subscription. Inspiron models include a 30-day trial to McAfee Business Protection with optional 1-year and 3-year paid subscriptions.

OptiPlex, Latitude, and Precision models include optional 30-day trial, 1-year, 3-year subscriptions or option to not include any anti-virus software.

Netflix could soon end its Basic plan for new subscribers around the world

Netflix has very quietly killed off its Basic subscription tier in Canada, effectively removing the cheapest option without ads from the country.

The removal only affects “new or rejoining members" forcing potential customers to choose between spending $5.99 CAD for the Standard with ads plan, $16.49 CAD for Standard, or $20.99 for Premium, according to Netflix’s Help website. The silver lining, if you can call it that, in all this is users already on the Basic plan can remain there until they either change plans or cancel their account. Apparently, the streaming giant ended the tier some time ago; it’s just that no one noticed until recently. The earliest mention we could find comes from a Twitter user who complained about the Basic plan termination back on June 10.

Currently, other countries across the globe haven’t seen any changes. The American Netflix Plans and Pricing page, for instance, still has the Basic plan listed at $9.99, so people elsewhere there are safe – at least for now. It’s worth mentioning Canada has been used as a testing ground of sorts by Netflix. The nation was among the first group to get the ad-supported plan back in early November 2022 before launching in other global regions.

Analysis: history repeating

Although there’s no indication Netflix will end the Basic plan anywhere else, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Reed Hastings, one of the streaming service’s co-founders, said back in 2020 the company would never introduce advertising to users. The platform also famously tweeted “Love is sharing a password” (which is still up) back in 2017. Well as it turns out, both of those comments have aged like milk. We now have an ad-supported plan plus Netflix enacted a crackdown on password sharing angering a lot of people. The company is no stranger to changing its mind years down the line.

But the burning question is will this be successful? Will Canadian users move onto another tier? Probably. The password-sharing crackdown, although controversial, did actually work in bringing in new subscriptions. In fact, Netflix recently saw the “largest days of subscriber growth in the US in four-and-a-half years” as a result of the new policy.

We reached out to Netflix to see if it would like to make a statement about this latest move and if it plans to terminate the basic plan in other countries. This story will be updated at a later time.

Diablo 4 dev "clears up some details" about its "rarest unique items"

Confused about how to secure some of Diablo 4's rarest items? You're not alone. In fact, Diablo 4's lead class designer Adam Jackson has been questioned enough about the action RPG's more unusual uniques that he decided to post a helpful tweet about them.

Whilst warning us that the highly sought-after items were "realllly rare", Jackson explained that there are currently six in the game – Andariel’s Visage, Doombringer, Harlequin Crest, Melted Heart of Selig, Ring of Starless Skies, and The Grandfather – and that they will always drop at 820 item power.

As for where to find them? Jackson confirmed that "you get them anywhere you can get a regular Unique" and "they can drop from level 85+ enemies".

Blizzard's general manager of Diablo, Rod Fergusson, recently revealed that you'll need to make a brand new character to participate in Diablo 4's upcoming battle pass

The battle pass – which is scheduled to launch in mid-to-late July, along with other seasonal content – means that your existing character won't be able to experience the new content, so players must start from scratch with a brand new character. Writing on Twitter, Fergusson stated that: "to take part in the seasonal questline, mechanics, season journey and battle pass, you will need to create a new seasonal character".

"Perhaps Diablo 4’s most adventurous quality is the move towards an open world in the 'modern' sense," we wrote in our Diablo 4 review.

"What could have been a featureless, bland expanse is, instead, a delight. Brimming with intrigue and danger, the open world of Sanctuary fits the Diablo formula like a glove, providing the space in which the game’s macabre aesthetic and bold mechanical design cohere beautifully."

Blizzard has confirmed that the DDoS attacks that have plagued its games for most of the weekend are now over, and its games, plus its website Battle.net, are up and running as normal again.
