Nvidia is powering a mega Tesla supercomputer powered by 10,000 H100 GPUs

Tesla has revealed its investment into a massive compute cluster comprising 10,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs specifically designed to power AI workloads.

The system, which went online this week, is designed to process the mountains of data its fleet of vehicles collect with a view to accelerating the development of fully self-driving vehicles, according to its leader of AI infrastructure, Tim Zaman.

Tesla has been striving for years to reach the point at which its vehicles can be considered entirely autonomous and has invested more than a billion dollars into adopting the infrastructure to make this possible.

Tesla supercomputer

In July 2023, CEO Elon Musk revealed the firm would invest $1 billion into building out its Dojo supercomputer over the next year. Dojo, which is based on Tesla’s own tech, began with the D1 chip, fitted with 354 custom CPU cores. Each training tile module comprises 25 D1 chips, with the base Dojo V1 configuration including 53,100 D1 cores in total.

The firm also built a compute cluster fitted with 5,760 Nvidia A100 GPUs in June 2012. But the firm’s latest investment in 10,000 of the company’s H100 GPUs dwarfs the power of this supercomputer.

This AI cluster, worth more than $300 million, will offer a peak performance of 340 FP64 PFLOPS for technical computing and 39.58 INT8 ExaFLOPS for AI applications, according to Tom’s Hardware

The power at Tesla’s disposal is actually more than that offered by the Lenoardo supercomputer, the publication pointed out, making it one of the most powerful computers on the planet.

Nvidia’s chips are the components that power many of the world’s leading generative AI platforms. These GPUs, which are fitted into servers, have several other use cases from medical imaging to generating weather models.

Tesla is hoping to use the power of these GPUs to more efficiently and effectively churn through the vast quantities of data it has to build a model that can successfully rival a human.

While many businesses would usually lean on infrastructure hosted by the likes of Google or Microsoft, Tesla’s supercomputing infrastructure is all on-prem, meanig the firm will also have to maintain all of it.

Lenovo Legion Go is the powerhouse the handheld gaming market was missing

First it was the Steam Deck then we had the Asus ROG Ally, and now Lenovo is jumping into the fray as the company has officially revealed its new handheld gaming device – the Legion Go.

Arguably the most eye-catching aspect out of everything the Lenovo Legion Go has to offer are the detachable TrueStrike controllers. Similar to the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons, they feature two joysticks, a directional pad, and a variety of face buttons. Fairly standard stuff.

But that’s where the similarities end because these TrueStrike controllers are capable of so much more. In total, you have 10 – yes, 10 – mappable shoulder buttons: two triggers, two bumpers, four in the back (two on each controller), plus an extra pair of inputs on the edges.

Lenovo Legion Go controller mouse

If that wasn’t enough, the right controller has a track pad on the front for controlling an on-screen cursor with a mouse wheel on the back for scrolling. On the bottom of the controller is an optical “eye”. When placed inside the accompanying stand, the "eye" can help the peripheral serve as a rudimentary gaming mouse.

Needless to say, the Legion TrueStrike controllers on the Legion Go totally blow the Switch’s Joy-Cons out of the water. It even comes with RGB lighting around the power button. Not only that, Lenovo’s hardware sports “hall effect joysticks” meaning no frustrating controller drift like you might experience on the Switch.

Notable features

Of course, there is more to the Legion Go besides the controllers.

The display is a 8.8-inch Lenovo PureSight gaming touchscreen, according to the company. With an aspect ratio of 16:10, it outputs a Quad HD Plus (2560 x 1600 pixels) resolution with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. The display is “capable of up to 500 nits [of] brightness”, covering “97 percent [of the] DCI-P3 color gamut”. Essentially, the screen looks fantastic.

Under the hood you have an “AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor” alongside an AMD RDNA graphics card which is the exact same type of hardware present on the ROG Ally. It also has 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM on board. So if you have tried out the ROG Ally, you can expect a similar level of performance on the Legion Go.

Storage peaks at 1TB although you can expand it by an extra 2TB via micro-SD card.

Lenovo Legion Go controllers

With all this hardware, the Legion Go will be quite power hungry. Lenovo is equipping its handheld with a 49.2Wh (watt-hour) battery. It supports the company’s proprietary Super Rapid Charge tech, “allowing the battery to recharge up to 70 percent” in about 30 minutes.

Other notable features include power bypass mode to “protect the battery from [deterioration]” and a kickstand on the back to prop up the Legion Go.

Availability

Color us impressed. Lenovo is entering the handheld scene guns ablaze. Neither the Steam Deck or Ally have opted for detachable controllers. We’re curious to know if Lenovo plans on releasing the TrueStrike on their own so we asked. This story will be updated if we hear back.

The Lenovo Legion Go launches on October 31 with prices starting £699/€799. That's roughly $875 USD, making it more expensive than both the Steam Deck and ROG Ally.

Quordle FAQs: Everything you need to know

What is Quordle?

Where Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day, Quordle presents you with four puzzles to solve. And rather than complete them in turn, you do so simultaneously. You get nine guesses, rather than the six for Wordle, but the rules are otherwise very similar.

It's played online via the Quordle website and you can also get to it via the Merriam-Webster site, after the dictionary purchased Quordle last year

As with Wordle, the answers are the same for every player each day, meaning that you're competing against the rest of the world. And also as with Wordle, the puzzle resets at midnight so you have a fresh challenge each day.

The website also includes a practice mode - which I definitely recommend using before attempting the game proper! - and there are daily stats including a streak count. You also get Quordle Achievements - specific badges for winning a game in a certain number of turns, playing lots of times, or guessing particularly hard words.

Oh, and it's difficult. Really difficult.

What are the Quordle rules?

The rules of Quordle are almost identical to those of Wordle.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray…

4. …BUT the word you guess appears in all quadrants of the puzzle at the same time, so an A could turn green in one square, yellow in another and gray in the final two.

5. Answers are never plural.

6. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

7. Each guess must be a valid word in Quordle's dictionary. You can't guess ABCDE, for instance.

8. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses and there is no equivalent of Wordle's Hard mode.

9. You have nine guesses to find the Quordle answers.

10. You must complete the daily Quordle before midnight in your timezone.

What is a good Quordle strategy?

Quordle needs to be approached in a different way to Wordle. With four puzzles to solve in nine guesses, you can't blindly throw letters at it and expect to win - you'll stand a far better chance if you think strategically.

That's the case in Wordle too, of course, but it's even more important in Quordle.

There are two key things to remember.

1. Use several starting words

Firstly, you won't want just a single starting word, but almost certainly two or three starting words.

The first of these should probably be one of the best Wordle starting words, because the same things that make them work well will apply here too. But after that, you should select another word or possibly two that use up lots more of the most common consonants and that include any remaining vowels.

For instance, I currently use STARE > DOILY > PUNCH. Between them, these three words use 15 of the 26 letters in the alphabet including all five vowels, Y, and nine of the most common consonants (S, T, R, D, L, P, N, C and H). There are plenty of other options - you might want to get an M, B, F or G in there instead of the H, maybe - but something like that should do the trick.

If all goes well, that will give you a good lead on what one or sometimes two of the answers might be. If not, well good luck!

2. Narrow things down

Secondly, if you're faced with a word where the answer might easily be one of several options - for instance -ATCH, where it could be MATCH, BATCH, LATCH, CATCH, WATCH, HATCH or PATCH - you'll definitely want to guess a word that would narrow down those options.

In Wordle, you can instead try several of those in succession and hope one is right, assuming you have enough guesses left. It's risky, but will sometimes work. Plus, it's the only option in Hard mode. But in Quordle, this will almost certainly result in a failure - you simply don't have enough guesses.

In the scenario above, CLAMP would be a great guess, as it could point the way to four of the seven words in one go.

Revolution Software is using their own AI technology to remake Broken Sword

TechRadar Gaming is reporting live from Gamescom 2023 on the latest and greatest developments in gaming and hardware.

Revolution Software announced at Gamescom 2023 that Broken Sword would be coming back, with Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars getting a full remake while a sixth title in the series is coming in the future too, under the title Broken Sword - Parzival’s Stone

Speaking to TRG ahead of the announcement, Cecil talked about the studio’s plans for a Broken Sword remake and the sixth title in the series. Cecil is a larger-than-life character, who is able to talk about the studio’s plans with enthusiasm. It even carries a pocketful of stones to illustrate the plans for Parzival’s Stone, but he also talks about how Broken Sword - The Shadow of the Templars would be using AI to upscale.

Cecil wasn’t shy about the studio’s use of AI technology, but he gave a fairly robust explanation of why the game was using it. The AI technology will be used to update the game’s animations.

When queried on this, Cecil said, " I completely share and appreciate the concerns. We're using our own data to train on. But probably more importantly, we're using a bunch of really talented animators who are taking the original animations and working on them so that we can use AI to upscale them.”

“It's absolutely brilliant. And that is then the basis on which they can then reanimate those characters. It’s our own system.”

Cecil explains that the intent isn’t to appropriate anyone’s work and that quality animators produce all of the work. The AI system is actually allowing the Broken Sword remake to happen, in fact.

“Nobody has been screwed on it at all,” suggests Cecil. “We have 30,000 animations in Broken Sword 1, and more in Broken Sword 2 - 40,000. So that's 70,000. If we wanted to convert the two games by hand, each one takes an hour. So if you pay somebody, let's say £15 an hour, you're talking well over a million pounds. So what we're able to do is really focus on really talented, high-quality people, and so much of the donkey work is taken away. We have a huge team - we have about 10 people animating at the moment, but they're not having to do the drudgery. What they're doing is they're adding the expressions and the character and all of those good things.”

While Cecil wouldn’t confirm that the studio was working on a remake for Broken Sword 2 as part of proceedings, this would certainly suggest that the team is considering a path to get the second game remade, too.

Honestly, I have my own knee-jerk reaction to AI tech being pushed into game development, but here, it seems like a way to get a beloved game the up-to-date re-release it deserves.

If you're looking for more games to pass the time while you wait for the Broken Sword remake, our list of the best RPGs may offer a new journey to embark on. We've also got a list of the best multiplayer games on PC if you're looking for something slightly more communal, too.

Jitsi Meet ditches anonymity—here's why

A popular secure video-conferencing app has just ditched the main feature making it for a long time the go-to for activists, journalists, and whoever looking for extra privacy: its users' anonymity.

Completely free to use, Jitsi Meet is an encrypted and open-source platform available for both web and mobile. Jitsi has increasingly become a privacy-first alternative to Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams for allowing people to use the service without an account. Until now, at least.

From August 24, 2023, users need to use a Gmail, Facebook, or GitHub account to create a meeting room on meet.jit.si. And, while the new authentication requirement isn't extended to the invitees, people are now worried about how this change will affect Jitsi's overall level of privacy and security.

Jitsi Meet's new authentication requirements

"When we started the service back in 2013, our goal was to offer a meeting experience with as little friction and as much privacy as possible," Jitsi noted in a blog post, describing Meet as a means to allow users to converse freely "without fear of expressing their views and opinions."

"Our commitment to both goals remains as strong as ever but anonymity is no longer going to be one of the tools we use to achieve them."

A rise in the number of reports concerning violations of its terms of service is allegedly the reason why the team finally decided to make the change. Despite not specifying the types of violation, the provider ensured that these were not "about some people merely saying things that others disliked."

We reached out to the company for further comments on this, but at the time of writing, we are still waiting for a response. Looking online, though, we found a couple of worrying reports: a user was lamenting about rooms playing videos of underage individuals, while another reported a third party joining the call without authorization.

Nevertheless, some users expressed their disappointment with the new authentication requirement.

Jitsi's official instance now requires you to authenticate with Facebook, Google, or Microsoft to host a call from r/privacy

Yet, Jitsi confirmed that encryption will keep securing all users' communications from data breaches and/or other snooping activities.

At the same time, according to the update of its privacy policy, the developer firm (8x8) may now "process and store third-party account credentials to authenticate meet.jit.si users" while using this information to "investigate fraud or abuse on the meet.jit.si service."

Talking about additional ways to ensure users privacy, Jitsi said: "We are still very much committed to holding user privacy in the highest regard and we still have no tools that would allow us to compromise the privacy of the actual audio or video content of a meeting, nor do we intend to create any."

The provider also invites whoever feels uncomfortable using an account to access the service to check the tutorial to host their own secure deployment of Jitsi Meet.

While Facebook, Google, and GitHub are the only accounts available to set up new meetings, the Jitsi team said the list may be extended to other services in the future.

France plans to boost internet censorship to combat online fraud

DNS providers and web browsers could be forced to block websites flagged by authorities in France under a new proposed law.

Currently pushed through parliament, the so-called SREN Bill comes as a way to regulate online content and tackle issues like digital fraud, online harassment, and minors' access to pornography.

Despite being motivated by legitimate concerns, experts deemed the Bill as a "dangerous slippery slope." Granting the French government greater website blocking powers will create further censorship technical capabilities, they warn, while setting up a worrying precedent that threatens the open internet.

France's SREN Bill

"In a well-intentioned yet dangerous move to fight online fraud, France is on the verge of forcing browsers to create a dystopian technical capability," wrote Mozilla, the company behind Firefox, in a blog post.

France's worrying bills

It isn't the first time France made headlines in recent months for proposing some controversial regulations.

▶ Also introduced into Parliament in July, France's justice reform bill seeks to grant police power to spy on citizens through phones.

▶ At the same time, President Macron is also pushing to allow social media shutdowns when the platforms failed to quickly delete hateful content during riots under the new Digital Service Act.

Especially troubling, Article 6 of the Bill will require DNS resolvers and web browsers to block any website blacklisted by the French government for alleged infringements.

Yet, according to experts, this opens up a series of controversies to both privacy and freedom of expression.

"Such a move will overturn decades of established content moderation norms and provide a playbook for authoritarian governments that will easily negate the existence of censorship circumvention tools," warned Mozilla.

Web browsers currently use malware and phishing protection software like Google's Safe Browsing and Microsoft's SmartScreen to notify users of these threats. These systems, though, leave the ultimate decision to users of whether or not to access a potentially dangerous site.

The SREN Bill is focused on blocking instead, but it seems to lack provisions to prevent this feature from being employed for other purposes.

"Forcing browsers to create capabilities that enable website blocking at the browser level is a slippery slope," said Mozilla.

"While it might be leveraged only for malware and phishing in France today, it will set a precedent and create the technical capability within browsers for whatever a government might want to restrict or criminalize in a given jurisdiction forever."

Privacy advocates at Article 19 raised further concerns over an overall negative impact on people's data privacy. They believe, in fact, that in order to comply with the new requirements, browsers may be pushed to collect more browsing data.

Even worse, greater censorship powers will also be a hard blow to both users' and content creators' freedom of expression with commentators fearing that browsers may need to implement blocking mandates also to those users located outside France's borders.

"Even if particular content may be restricted under international law, blocking and filtering through the DNS or browser rarely, if ever, present a necessary or proportionate action," said Mehwish Ansari, Head of Digital at ARTICLE 19, in an official statement. "As it stands, this Bill fundamentally undermines freedoms that are guaranteed by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights."

Ansari also warns that the Bill will give the French government "enormous, potentially extraterritorial power to censor websites without any clear judicial oversight or public accountability."

Both Mozilla and Article 19 call the French government to reconsider these provisions, in favor of safer solutions such as improving the existing mechanisms already utilized by browsers as well as better public awareness.

Mozilla urges everyone to sign their petition to halt the "accelerated" parliamentary procedure which is set to vote on the Bill (introduced just right before the summer break, on July 5) as early as this fall.

Chromebook owners can try out GeForce Now for free – but there’s a catch

Beginning today, Google is offering Chromebook owners a free, three-month subscription to Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service.

For those who may be unfamiliar, GeForce Now gives people access to a powerful gaming rig on Nvidia’s servers. That way, you can play popular titles with high definition graphics even if your computer doesn’t have the greatest hardware. This new deal is specifically for a subscription to GeForce Now Priority which is the mid-range tier of the service. It gives access to games running up to 1080p resolution at 60FPS, six-hour session lengths, and enables RTX ON for optimal graphic fidelity.

Also, if you own a specific Cloud Gaming Chromebook model, that free subscription gets upgraded to GeForce Now Ultimate – the highest tier. The third plan offers games running up to 4K resolution at 120FPS, eight-hour sessions, plus “exclusive access to RTX 4080 Servers.” A full list of supporting models can be found on Google’s website. They include the Acer Chromebook 516 GE and ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX55 Flip.

How to get the membership

To get this promotion, you first have to head over to the Chromebook Perks page. Scroll down until you find the GeForce Now entry then click the Get Perk button. Once redeemed, Google states you’ll have to “create a GeForce Now account and download the [official] app from the Google Play Store.” Sync any pre-existing gaming accounts from digital stores like Steam to the new one. After that, you can play whatever’s in your library.

There is one restriction. A Google spokesperson told TheVerge users must own a “Chromebook from 2017 or newer” to get the perk. Apart from needing a modern Chromebook, you’re good to go. You don’t need to “enter any credit card information” or commit to anything.

On the Nvidia side of things, the hardware giant announced it’s going to be adding 24 new games to its service next month such as Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. What’s more is the company very recently entered a partnership with Microsoft bringing Xbox Game Pass to GeForce Now, introducing hundreds of the best PC games to another audience.

Positive influence

It is good to see something positive come out of Google’s gaming efforts. Of course, there was the death of Google Stadia in late 2022, but there was one more incident.

Not too long ago, it was discovered Google had canceled multiple projects for Chromebook powered by Nvidia graphics cards. These devices were supposed to be its big push into PC gaming, however it just didn’t pan out. To this day, no one knows exactly why these laptops were scrapped although speculation suggests developmental difficulties.

DJI Mini 4 Pro: leaks, release date and price

When it arrived in May 2023 the DJI Mini 3 Pro impressed us so much, we ranked it as the best compact drone for most people. It earned this accolade thanks to its compact size, intelligent obstacle avoidance and the low-light performance of its 4K camera.

Its tiny dimensions saw it slot neatly into the sub-250g drone category, meaning it could be flown almost anywhere without restriction.

Now it looks like DJI is preparing to announce a successor, likely called the Mini 4 Pro. The timing couldn’t be better from DJI, since new US legislation coming into effect on September 16 requires drones weighing more than 250g to constantly broadcast the location of both the pilot and the aircraft itself.

If the successor to the Mini 3 Pro remains below that crucial 250g limit, then owners will be free to fly their drone without the need for registration or identification. Launching the Mini 4 Pro at the end of September, as was recently suggested, would be perfect timing from DJI.

Updates are expected to be fairly minor compared to the Mini 3 Pro, but could include an upgrade for the drone’s obstacle-avoidance system, improved transmission technology, longer flight time and the inclusion of DJI’s new RC 2 controller. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect from the upcoming DJI Mini 4 Pro.

DJI Mini 4 Pro: Cut to the chase

DJI Mini 3 Pro

The DJI Mini 3 Pro drone with its propellors folded away (Image credit: Peter Hoffmann)
  • What is it? A new, sub-250g drone from DJI with the same folding design as the Mini 3 Pro
  • When is it out? Expected to be late-September
  • How much will it cost? Unknown for now, but likely similar to the DJI Mini 3 Pro, which is currently priced from $759 / £709 / AU$1,119

DJI Mini 4 Pro: What's in a name?

DJI’s drone hierarchy isn’t always easy to decipher. Looking at the current range of consumer drones, DJI describes the Mini 3 as its entry-level offering. Above this you’ll find the Mini 3 Pro and the new Air 3, which are both referred to as “advanced” drones, and the Mavic 3 Pro is the current flagship of the range.

The Mini 4 Pro would replace the Mini 3 Pro (and likely cause a price cut for its predecessor until retailer stock runs dry) as a drone that blends pro-level features with the all-important, sub-250g design.

DJI Mini 4 Pro: New features and upgrades

Little is known for certain, but the Mini 4 Pro appears to be in the testing stage of development. Videos published to X (formerly Twitter) by Igor Bogdanov, who has a strong track record for drone and action camera leaks, appear to show a more advanced obstacle avoidance system than that fitted to the Mini 3 Pro. This could mean omnidirectional avoidance technology like that seen on the new DJI Air 3.

Not much else is known about the Mini 4 Pro for now, but if the videos published online are genuine then it looks like development is somewhat advanced and a release date shouldn’t be too far away.

As for what we expect to see, it wouldn't be surprising for DJI to equip the Mini 4 Pro with a new, fourth generation of its Ocusync connection technology, plus support for the new and more powerful RC 2 controller.

Improvements to the camera would always be welcome, but we can’t see DJI making a great deal of change here, as any major upgrades would see the Mini 4 Pro encroach on the new Air 3. Similarly, a few extra minutes of flight time would be appreciated, but the Mini 3 Pro’s 47 minutes is already a minute ahead of the pricier Air 3.

DJI Mini 4 Pro: price and release date

Jasper Ellens also claims the DJI Mini 4 Pro could be released at the end of September.

Elsewhere, drone YouTuber The Drone Geek also says a late-September launch seems likely, especially with the new remote-identification rule coming into force in the US in the middle of the month. DJI would surely see strong initial sales if its new, sub-250g drone arrived just a couple of weeks later.

Although the current Mini 3 Pro only came out 15 months ago, in May 2022, launching new drones in September isn’t out of the ordinary for DJI. The company has previously released new models that month, including the Osmo Action 3 camera in 2022 and the Mavic Pro drone in 2016. Fifteen months is a fast turnaround for the Mini 4 Pro, but we don’t think it’s an impossible ask for DJI.

As for the price, the Mini 4 Pro will likely cost roughly the same as the Mini 3 Pro, at $759 / £709 / AU$1,119. That way it fits nicely between the entry-level Mini 3 ($469) and the more advanced Air 3 ($1,099).

DJI Mini 4 Pro: Omnidirectional avoidance

Igor Bogdanov also used his Quadro_News account on X to publish an image claiming to show the Mini 4 Pro. The quality isn’t great, but we can see how the shape of the front-facing obstacle avoidance system is different to that of the Mini 3 Pro.

It looks like there is a second set of sensors behind those pointing forwards. These could be facing upwards, and therefore enable omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, where the drone can see in every direction and stop itself from flying into objects above it, as well as in front and behind.

This would be a nice additional feature, and bring the Mini 4 Pro’s obstacle avoidance tech in line with the more expensive Air 3 and Mavic 3 Pro. It might not be enough to convince Mini 3 Pro owners to upgrade, however, so hopefully DJI has more up its sleeve, potentially in the form of camera improvements, a greater flight time and enhanced transmission technology.

Google wants to use generative AI to boost its security tools

Google is integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI) into a couple of its security products, to give the tools a boost and make them easier to use.

At its recent Google Cloud Next 23 event, the company announced its Duet AI will make its way to Mandiant Threat Intelligence, Chronicle Security Operations, and Security Command Center.

Google’s head of UX for cloud security, Steph Hay, explained that the goal was to lower the burden on IT teams, minimize threats, and lower the barrier to entry into the cybersecurity space.

Improving security posture

“We’re really trying to supercharge security with generative AI to mitigate threats, and in particular prevent downstream impacts that our practitioners face today, to reduce the toil that the security teams deal with having to manage a growing attack surface, and really bridge the cyber talent gap,” Hay said.

“AI is enabling security teams to improve their security posture by generating AI summaries to describe threats, by searching for patterns in security data to identify if teams have been targeted or companies have been targeted, and finally, by recommending actions to take both in response to active threats and also to proactively improve security posture,” she added.

That being said, Google’s Duet AI will be integrated into Mandiant Threat Intelligence (a company Google bought last year), to help IT teams make sense of mountains of data more easily. Then, it will be added to Chronicle Security Operations, where it expects the tool to be used by teams to learn more about specific threats and how they can be mitigated.

Finally, Google is adding Duet AI into its Security Command Center, allowing security analysts with less experience to understand security findings and to learn more about potential attacks and means of mitigation.

The new additions are currently in preview and should be released before the end of the year.

Meta Quest 3 firmware leak reveals big depth mapping upgrade

All the signs are that Meta is going to fully unveil the Meta Quest 3, and give us an on sale date, at its special event on September 27. Until then, we're learning more about the device through leaks – such as the latest one that reveals its depth mapping capabilities.

In a clip dug out of the Meta Quest 3 firmware and posted to Reddit (via user Samulia and UploadVR), we see a short animation visualizing how the depth mapping is going to work. In short, it looks pretty advanced, and way ahead of the Oculus Quest 2.

We see a detailed mesh covering all of the objects in the room, and there seems to be some kind of object identification going on here as well – the couch is labeled with a couch icon, for example, so the Meta Quest 3 clearly knows what it is.

The player avatar is then shown chasing a digital character around the room, as it jumps on and behind furniture. This is an example of mixed reality occlusion, where digital elements appear to be in the same world as physical elements, and it hints at some of the experiences that will be possible on the new headset.

Meta Quest 3 room mapping visualization found in the firmware. from r/OculusQuest

A room with a view

On the current Oculus Quest 2, you're required to manually map out a free space inside a room. You can also mark out rectangular cuboids for pieces of furniture and walls, but it takes a while – and these maps aren't fully used by developers anyway.

This looks like a much more slick and comprehensive solution, and it matches up with another clip revealed in June. Meta has made noises about the Meta Quest 3 "intelligently understanding" what's inside a room, but that's all that's been made official so far.

The depth mapping and the way that mapping is used would appear to even go beyond the latest Meta Quest Pro headset. That device does have some automatic room mapping capabilities, but it doesn't have a dedicated depth sensor inside it.

Meta has another of its Connect showcases scheduled for September 27, and all should be revealed by then. While you're waiting, you can check out the latest teaser trailer for the device, and everything we know about it so far.

Microsoft is still blocking some of its biggest customers from running Windows apps

Microsoft’s decision to discourage users from running its software on other non-company clouds, by means of increased cost, is still causing a headache for Google Cloud Platform and Alibaba customers.

Earlier this month, Redmond changed its terms to allow AWS customers to use its office software on the rival platform, however many are still being left out.

A couple of weeks have passed since the change, and still, the company has not indicated whether similar changes may be reflected for Google and Alibaba.

Microsoft discouraging rival cloud companies

From August 1, Microsoft confirmed that “users with specific licenses may run Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise/business, Microsoft Project, and Microsoft Visio on Amazon WorkSpaces” virtual desktop infrastructure.

Microsoft declined to comment when we asked whether it would make similar concessions for Google and Alibaba.

According to anonymous sources close to Microsoft and rival companies (via The Register), “there's absolutely no technical reason” why Google and Alibaba should be locked out - “it is purely commercial.”

When the changes were made for AWS customers, we asked Microsoft to comment on why this was. The company has not commented, and it remains unclear why AWS received preferential treatment.

Gartner Research VP Michael Silver believes that the overall issue persists for all Listed Providers, including Amazon, and that “customers should still be lobbying Microsoft to eliminate the Listed Provider limitations” altogether.

Microsoft has proven very popular in European discussion circles, and all for the wrong reasons. Recently, it faced a months-long battle relating to its unfair licensing terms that make changing providers or employing a multicloud environment both challenging and costly. Besides promising to be working with the relevant bodies, Redmond has not shared any details on that.

Google Photos' Locked Folder can now keep your sensitive images safe on iOS

Google is expanding the reach of its Locked Folder tool on the Google Photos app so it will soon be available on iOS and web. This means that if you decide to switch from an Android device to an iPhone, you can still access your secure files without issue.

It doesn’t appear like there’s any major difference between the three versions. All three types of users can store their content in a Locked Folder then back it up so it can be accessed across multiple devices. According to Google in the official announcement that you’ll be saving your files on “one of the world’s most advanced security infrastructures.”

When it first launched, Locked Folder was exclusive to Google Photos on Android. It provided users a “passcode-protected space” for images or videos, ensuring that they won’t appear on your “photo grid or other apps.”

The problem was the Locked Folders feature wasn't available outside of Android smartphones, as we just covered. So if an iPhone owner wanted to hide particularly sensitive media, they were out of luck. Those images could end up on other connected apps where they're displayed in full view.

With this update, you can rest easy knowing that moving forward, any embarrassing snapshots of you at that Christmas party will remain hidden on your iPhone.

In addition to the expansion, the company is also simplifying the settings page on Google Photos to make finding and adjusting privacy controls easier. The menu will no longer have everything messily displayed on a single screen. Instead, individual tabs will be compartmentalized into larger sections for a much cleaner look. The Privacy tab, for example, will have all of the sharing tools where you can decide which of your friends has access to your image folders.

Availability

Keep an eye out for the update patch when it arrives. Google states the new layout for the settings page is now available on Google Photos for Android and iOS. Also, Locked Folder support begins rolling out to iOS users today.

It’s unknown when Locked Folder will make its way to Google Photos on web browsers. We didn’t see anything on our personal account. However, it is worth mentioning there are instructions for setting up Locked Folders for desktop via the official Google Photos Help website. This could mean the browser update will be launching soon – although we don’t know when. We reached out to Google for more information about when we can expect the final patch. This story will be updated at a later time.

iPhone 15 to be revealed at September 12 Apple event – here's what we know

Apple is hosting a ‘Wonderlust’ event at its Apple Park compound on September 12 at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm BST. Nothing has been officially confirmed although there are a variety of clues.

For instance, the iPhone 15. Notable Apple insider Mark Gurman claimed on X this will be the official reveal of the tech giant’s upcoming flagship phone. Plus, it follows the company’s MO of announcing mobile devices in mid-September.

Gurman states in a new Bloomberg report the company will introduce “two entry-level models and two high-end models” for the iPhone series. The lower-end devices, as he refers to them, will most likely be called the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. He doesn’t mention the names of the higher-end phones, but they could be dubbed the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max – assuming Apple continues with the same naming convention it established with the iPhone 14 line.

The report goes on to detail some of the expected changes. All four will sport a USB-C charging port in order to comply with European Union legislation.  Moreover, the higher-end models will utilize a titanium frame instead of a stainless steel one and have thinner bezels and a “new camera with deeper optical zoom.”

Most of what is in the Bloomberg piece does line up with previously established rumors. He doesn’t detail what colors the iPhone 15 will come in. However, images posted on X by leaker Majin Bu suggest the device will be available in a light pastel green.

We believe this shade will actually be referred to as cyan by Apple if we go by other rumors. Additionally, we’ve heard talk about options for Pink, Midnight black, and a vibrant hue of red.

Gurman goes on to say we could also see the introduction of the new Apple Watch 9 as well as the next generation AirPods. There hasn't been a lot of leaked information for the wearable, though it has been said the future smartwatch will run watchOS 10 on a “much more powerful chipset than the Apple Watch 8”.

The next gen AirPods are said to sport a USB-C input on (presumably) the charging case. Back in May, we heard through the grapevine that the AirPods Pro 2 will support USB-C connectivity. Gurman could be referring to those or the AirPods 4.

Analysis: What we might see

It's hard to say for sure what exactly will be at Wonderlust 2023. Compared to previous events, the clues this time are way more obtuse. To get any idea of what the event will bring, we’ll have to look at the logo.

The swirl of silver and blue metallic sand could refer to the titanium frame of the higher-end devices as well as their color since light blue and silver are two of the rumored shades for the line. But that’s pretty much all we can extrapolate. "Wonderlust' as a name could mean anything. Apple is playing its cards close to its chest.

Stay tuned for TechRadar’s coverage of the Wonderlust event where we’ll break down every bit of detail as the information comes out.

Intel's latest Xeon chips look to give your data center a major power boost

Even though Intel’s 5th Gen Xeon (Emerald Rapids) chips won’t be launching until the final three months of this year, we already know what to expect in 2024.

The company has lifted the wraps off its up-and-coming Sierra Forest and Granite Rapids products, and yet again, there’s a clear emphasis on artificial intelligence while tackling some of the industry’s biggest issues.

Adding to the existing Performance-core (P-core) architecture will be a new Efficient-core (E-core) architecture to help data centers in their ongoing (and frankly colossal) battle with energy efficiency.

Intel’s 2024 lineup will be even better for the environment

According to the company’s announcement, it is the provider of the best AI performance on any CPU, and the processors with P-cores (Granite Rapids) promise to give a significant boost to those looking to carry out intensive AI workloads.

Compared with the 4th Gen Xeon chips that we know today as Sapphire Rapids, Granite Rapids looks to be able to deliver 2-3x better performance for mixed AI workloads.

It’s the processors with E-cores, codenamed Sierra Forest, which are most worthy of the spotlight, though. Compared with 4th Gen hardware, Sierra Forest chips promise up to 2.4x better performance per watt. Despite each CPU being able to accommodate up to 144 cores, the vastly improved efficiency should help data centers to significantly reduce their power consumption where applicable in 1S and 2S servers.

Data centers in particular have come under scrutiny recently over their intensive consumption of numerous resources, particularly energy and water. While the solution clearly lies in a multifaceted approach, including reducing our own digital footprint, being able to carry out the same work with fewer resources is clearly an important piece of the puzzle.

Game Boy-compatible Analogue Pocket is getting a glow in the dark version soon

Hardware manufacturer Analogue has announced a special edition for its Analogue Pocket handheld gaming device - and it's available very soon.

The Analogue Pocket Glow in the Dark edition looks to do exactly what it says on the tin. If you're familiar with the Game Boy-compatible handheld, it looks to be practically identical, albeit with a green glow that illuminates in darker environments.

The new version of the handheld will be available in "highly limited quantities" from September 1 for $249.99 (around £199.99 / AU$369). Shipping will promptly commence on September 5, so you won't have to wait too long for this version of the Analogue Pocket to be delivered should you choose to order one.

Comparatively, that's $30 pricier than the standard Analogue Pocket model, which typically costs $219 (around £179 / AU$340). However, as the handheld is constantly in high demand and quite frequently out of stock, this Glow in the Dark edition might be your best chance to snag one from the manufacturer's website directly.

The Analogue Pocket is similar to the Evercade EXP, one of the best handheld games consoles you can buy, in that it requires cartridges in order to play games. However, unlike Evercade's bespoke cartridges, Analogue takes a different approach in that it's compatible with Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance cartridges. The manufacturer also sells cartridge adapters which add support for TurboGrafx-16, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx and Game Gear games among others.

What's particularly impressive about the Analogue Pocket is there's absolutely no emulation happening here. All supported titles run natively on the hardware and really pop thanks to its sharp, 3.5-inch LCD screen that boasts a 1600x1440 resolution for crystal clear image clarity and accuracy.

If you own an Analogue Pocket or are simply looking to relive some handheld classics, have a read of our best GBA games list for top recommendations for Nintendo's third-generation handheld.

OLED iPad Pros tipped for 2024 with M3 chips and a new Magic Keyboard

It would seem the iPad Pro models are going to get quite the revamp in 2024, with new screens and new chipsets – a revamp which is probably overdue for these premium tablets, which have had rather minor updates since 2018.

As per the usually reliable Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter at Bloomberg, Apple is hoping that the upgrades it introduces will "shake up" a stagnant tablet market and spark some fresh interest in the most expensive iPads.

There will be two new models in the first half of next year, Gurman says, both with OLED displays – a switch that's long been rumored. Right now the 11-inch iPad Pro uses standard LED and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro uses mini-LED.

The 11-inch screen size will be retained, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro will become a 13-inch model. The iPad Pro screens are already very good, but the introduction of OLED should mean that they get crisper and brighter, and even better at color reproduction.

New chips and accessories

On the inside, these tablets are predicted to run the as-yet-unannounced M3 chips from Apple. That makes sense, considering that the current models run the M2 chip, so expect even faster performance and an even broader range of features.

Gurman also says that a new Magic Keyboard is in the works, an accessory that hasn't been updated since its 2020 debut. The 2024 edition will apparently have a larger trackpad, and make the iPad Pro "look even more like a laptop".

Like most manufacturers, Apple is seeing declines in tablet sales, according to Gurman – declines that haven't been helped by minor iPad updates, a confusing overall lineup (see the iPad Air 5 vs the iPad Pro 2022), and underwhelming iPadOS updates.

We'll have to wait and see if these new OLED iPad Pros can make a difference when they appear next year. In the meantime, all eyes are on Apple's expected September event, when we should see the iPhone 15 and the Apple Watch 9.
