Google Messages new update makes it look a bit like the iPhone's Messages app

To commemorate one billion monthly active users, Google is introducing several new customization options on its Messages app.

What’s particularly interesting about the update is that a few of the features are reminiscent of what you find on Apple’s own Messages app. For example, you have Photomoji, allowing you to clip specific parts in a photograph and use them as emoji reactions. iOS 17 has something similar called Stickers. In Google Messages, cutouts are “saved in a special tab for reuse”, plus other people in a group chat can use the same Photomojis at any time.

The similarities don’t stop there. Google Messages is adding Profiles that let users create an introductory biography about themselves alongside their name and a picture. Its iOS counterpart would be Contact Poster. In addition, the app will now have animated Screen Effects akin to the message animations on iPhone. Unlike iOS, you can’t activate the colorful displays whenever you want as Google’s rendition requires you to enter specific “prompt words”. The full list of prompts isn’t in the announcement, although it does mention two.

Typing in “I love you” will launch a bunch of hearts. Entering “it’s snowing” would presumably cause snowflakes to fall from the top. There wasn’t a demo showcasing the latter so we can’t say for sure.

Unique inclusions

Of course, the update isn’t only about copying Apple.

There are Voice Moods that’ll let you slap an emoji onto a voice recording, giving it extra visual flair. Additionally, Google states it’ll be “increasing the bitrate and sampling rate” on vocal messages to improve audio quality. Next, you can change the color scheme of a chat, namely the text bubbles and background, to whatever you want via Custom Bubbles. This can help you differentiate conversations so you don’t accidentally send the wrong text to your mom when it was meant for a friend.

Google Messages' new Voice Mood

The last two aren’t as impactful, but they can add some nice flourishes to a chat. Now when you react to a message with an emoji, a short animation called a Reaction Effect will play at the same time. Also, standalone emojis sent through the app will sport extra visual effects like sparkles.

Once you get the patch, you can try out most of these features so keep an eye out for when it eventually arrives. The two outliers are Voice Moods and Reaction Effects; both of which are currently in beta. To try those out, you’ll have to become a beta tester for Google Messages, according to the official support page.

Android update

Besides the Messages update, Google is adding new features to other Android platforms. A lot is being implemented so we’re only going to mention the more impactful additions.

Moving forward, smartwatches running Wear OS can now control more smart appliances like vacuums and groups of smart lights. The TalkBack tool is being given an AI voice that’ll read out text descriptions to help blind people understand the content in front of them. And finally, Live Caption on smartphones will be available in more languages.

'A mini data center village under the sea' — China sinks tens of thousands of powerful servers in fresh seawater as it grapples with demand for more power

China has started to assemble what might turn out to be the world's first commercial underwater data center, as it aims to take advantage of the freezing water to cool its operations and save on energy consumption.

The data center, which comprises 100 units spanning 68,000 square meters in size, will be constructed over five years at the bottom of the sea off the coast of Sanya, a coastal city on the island of Hainan in southern China, according to China Central Television (CCTV).

Each data storage weighs 1,300 tons and processes more than four million HD images in 30 seconds, with the performance equivalent to stitching together the processing power of 60,000 of the best conventional desktop PCs together.

Saving energy by going underwater

China started to assemble the facility in April, planting the first data storage unit in place, and has now undergone the procss of putting together all 100 units together, according to sister site Tom's Hardware. Each module must travel 35 meters to the seafloor, which takes three hours. But, thankfully, it'll set to last 25 years.

With the demand for big data processing, cloud services, as well as generative AI workloads in the industry expanding across the world, the data center industry is in something of a construction boom.

New projects are starting up everywhere to meet the rising demand, but this has knock-on effects for other parts of the economy, particularly given the tendency for data centers to guzzle up land mass, water (for cooling) as well as energy.

This project has been years in the making, and there are several key benefits. Firstly, it'll save land that could otherwise be used to build other commercial buildings or housing.

Secondly, it'll save roughly 122 million kWh of electricity as well as roughly 105,000 tons of freshwater each year. This is because the freezing seawater acts as a natural cooling element, which can reduce the csot of using water as a coolant on a land-based facility.

Once completed, the data center will be between 40 and 60% more energy efficient than land-based data centers, according to general manager of the UDC Hainan pilot development project, Pu Ding, reported Tom's Hardware.

Many organizations and entities have previously submerged data centers under water – including Microsoft's Project Natick. But this will be the first commercial data center facility that will serve a variety of organizations.

Google wants you to bring the laughts with its new .meme domain

Memes, the internet's favourite way to spread culture and ideas, have a new home onlinethanks to the launch of Google's new top-level .meme domain.

Google Registry recently announced that the new .meme domain will be publicly available from December 5 at a base annual price.

Early adopters can secure a .meme domain before then as part of Google’s Early Access Period (EAP), but this will require an “additional one-time fee” that will decrease on a daily basis until the domain is publicly launched.

Early adopters meme business

As part of the announcement, Google highlighted six early adopters of the .meme domain. Partners include meme trend website Know Your Meme, premier meme clearinghouse License.Meme and (perhaps unsurprisingly) a host of cat meme sites including Grumpy Cat, Nyan Cat, and CAT.MEME.

"Memes are the embodiment of internet culture, having captured the eyeballs, hearts and minds of millions of people," Christina Yeh from Google's Registry Team wrote in a blog post announcing the news.

"Whether you're sharing a relatable scenario, capturing a feeling that's difficult to express with just words, relishing in sheer randomness or even trying to start a social movement, we can't wait to see how you'll use .meme to express yourself."

The announcement highlights the rise of internet culture as a commodity. It also follows wider industry trends for making website creation more accessible and customizable, marked by the growing popularity of drag-and-drop website builders and other recent domain launches including .ing, .dad and .esq.

Docker Hub could be containing thousands of valuable secrets, and they're all in plain view

There are “thousands” of secrets exposed on Docker Hub, ranging from harmless API keys to potentially harmful information.

This is according to researchers from the Cybernews Research team, who recently analyzed 10,178 Docker Hub images. In those, they found almost 5,500 container images (54%) holding secrets that could be deemed sensitive information.

From those 5,500 container images, the researchers pulled exactly 191,529 secrets. Many were duplicates which, when removed, left the researchers with exactly 48,481 unique secrets.

Billions of downloads

The most common secret was GitHub tokens, comprising 26.6% of all the secrets discovered (51,038). This one was followed by Datadog Tokens (13.9%), and Uniform Resource Identifiers (7.6%). Ten thousand private keys used for encrypting or decrypting were also discovered.

While these numbers are staggering, those with an eye for detail can discover even more potent secrets. For example, the researchers found more than 9,000 PayPal OAuth secrets, used to control access to user accounts and financial information. Furthermore, there were almost 8,000 UnifyID secrets that could expose identity data.

The containers holding these secrets have been downloaded more than 132 billion times already.

“That means that exposed secrets could be running on multiple servers around the globe, posing risks and draining cloud resources from inconspicuous Docker Hub contributors," Cybernews researcher Vincentas Baubonis warns.

"Leaving any secrets exposed while uploading your images online poses a high risk of threat actors finding them.”

Most secrets, the researchers further explained, came from re-using packages with sensitive information.

“Developers expose diverse hidden data types and a vast amount of sensitive data. The ratio of unique secrets per each vulnerable docker image is practically eight to one, meaning that one image, exposing any secrets, is likely exposing eight of them on average,” Baubonis warned.

The research reveals a widespread practice of leaving sensitive data in container images, prompting a call for organizations to strengthen security measures. Baubonis advises developers to reset exposed secrets, encrypt sensitive data within images, and educate staff on the risks associated with embedded data.

Malicious links are dominating emails all over the world

Malicious web links are dominating emails all over the world, being used to deliver harmful malware in order to wreak havoc or extort money.

A new research paper by cybersecurity experts Hornetsecurity found that besides malicious web links, hackers are still super interested in phishing. With an increase of almost 4% year-on-year (39.6% - 43.3%), it is still the most common email attack technique.

Hackers are also constantly evolving their tactics by changing email formats and attachments to best sneak around spam filters.

Preferred partner (What does this mean?

Impersonating major brands

According to its Cyber Security Report 2024, based on an analysis of 45 billion emails sent last year, Hornetsecurity found the percentage of emails containing harmful web links rose by 144%, rising from 12.5% of all threats last year, to 30.5% this year.

Last year, when Microsoft disabled macros by default in Office, hackers quickly pivoted from Word and Excel files (down 9.5% and 6.7% respectively), to HTML files (37.1% of files analyzed), PDFs (23.3%), and Archive files (20.8%). Of all the new additions, HTML files seem to be the most popular, rising by 76.6% in the last year alone.

When sending malicious emails, hackers are usually impersonating popular brands. DHL takes up 26.1% of all impersonations, Amazon 7.7%, and FedEx 2.3%. Other notable mentions include LinkedIn, Microsoft (both 2.4%), and Netflix (2.2%).

Threat actors also don’t seem to be particularly interested in a specific vertical, or business. While some endpoints may be attacked more frequently, there isn’t a single industry that’s safe from email-borne attacks.

“If an organization can pay a ransom, it’s a target to cybercriminals,” the researchers said. Notable mentions include the research industry, entertainment companies, and the manufacturing sector.

“Many organizations are too reactive, only responding to specific threats or acting after they have fallen victim," commented Daniel Hofmann, Hornetsecurity CEO.

"This approach leaves them vulnerable to attack. Businesses need a zero-trust mindset to protect themselves and should adopt all-encompassing security services to set their minds at rest.

"Our research highlights the adaptability of cybercriminals, and the rapid shifts that have taken place in the last year.”

JBL could soon launch Sonos-like multi-room speakers as Harman acquires Roon

Sorry Sonos, but I'm pretty sure JBL speakers are about to get an audiophile-grade software update – and maybe even a new swathe of Sonos-like, multi-room audio products piggybacking on your home's wi-fi network.

Think of JBL speakers and you probably thing of compact, rugged, barrel-like Bluetooth options ready to toss in your road-trip bag and thus add music to your campfire cooking. Yes, they're some of the best Bluetooth speakers on the market (see the JBL Flip 6 and JBL Charge 5 at third and sixth spot respectively) but what the vast majority of JBL speakers are not, is Roon ready. That is because these Bluetooth-only speaker boxes cannot jump on your home's wi-fi network in the way some of the best wireless speakers can – the way that the Sonos Era 100 (top spot) or Sonos Roam (fifth) can, for example.

But I think that is all about to change. Why? Because today, (as reported by Business Wire ) JBL's parent company, Harman, announced the acquisition of Roon, an audiophile-friendly, multi-device, multi-room, wireless music management and streaming platform.

Roon has oft been called "AirPlay for audiophiles" (mostly by Roon itself) because any Roon Ready device (ie. a speaker with the software baked in) can receive streams of up to 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512, where AirPlay streaming maxes out at 'CD quality' 16bit/44.1kHz.

And why would Harman buy Roon if it didn't plan on implementing it in one of its biggest brands? Other hi-fi names under Harman's umbrella include AKG, Harman Kardon and Mark Levinson, so at the very least I predict 'Roon Tested' labels on new wi-fi enabled JBL kit very soon.

Opinion: a JBL wi-fi portable speaker to rival the Sonos Roam? Yes please

Sonos Roam Lunar White

Sonos Roam is a lovely thing, but might we soon be calling our home network the JBL system?  (Image credit: Peter Hoffmann)

For anyone who's invested the $150 annual Roon membership fee (which is around £118 or AU$226), don't worry: it seems nothing will change for Roon subscribers. Harman's press release promises, "Roon will operate as a standalone Harman business with its existing team".

community forum post written by Roon Labs Founder Enno Vandermeer also confirms, "In broad strokes, Roon will continue exactly as it is", with no change to existing device support and membership all set to "remain valid and will continue without interruption".

What I'm most interested in is the possibility of a JBL portable speaker capable of more than JBL's divisive PartyBoost daisy-chaining Bluetooth software. Why divisive? Because while progress is of course to be encouraged, PartyBoost arrived relatively recently, as an upgrade on JBL's older Connect+ tech for beefing up the audio by sharing it to multiple JBL speakers – and Connect+ and PartyBoost weren't compatible. So, if you'd spent years building a collection of JBL Bluetooth speakers, they all suddenly felt old hat because they couldn't play nice with the new ones. The splendid JBL Charge 4, for example, cannot be connected to the JBL Charge 5 Bluetooth only speaker, because the former is Connect+ enabled, while the latter has PartyBoost baked in.

And it's not as if Harman can't make excellent wi-fi enabled speakers ripe for a multi-room wireless audio ecosystem – just see the JBL Authentics 200, 300 and 500, launched at IFA 2023 and the May 2023-issue wi-fi and Dolby Atmos enabled JBL Charge 5 and Boombox 3 iterations for starters. Might similar JBL speakers soon be listed as Roon Ready and Roon Tested in the JBL section of Roon's website? I would certainly hope so – and Sonos might want to take note.

Could we also soon be saying, "I'll play it on the JBL system at home"? Highly likely, given Harman's most recent buy.

I review TVs for a living and these are the 8 best TV deals still live after Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday has been and gone, but there are still some fantastic Cyber Monday deals available to snap up. As a TV reviewer, I know what a great deal looks like when it comes to display tech, features and screen size, so you can trust that I'll only include the best here.

In terms of TVs, there are a mix of sizes and technologies on offer at the moment to suit every budget, from OLED displays to budget, smaller LEDs and everything in between. Among these deals are some of the best TVs available, including some TechRadar Choice Award winners

Keep reading to find eight of the best Cyber Monday TV deals that are still available – these deals could likely stick around through to December depending on stock too based on previous sales seasons we've seen.

Best post-Cyber Monday TV deals in the US

Amazon 50-inch 4-Series 4K Smart Fire TV (2021): was $449.99 now $289.99 at Amazon
The Amazon 4-Series is one of the best-selling TVs on Amazon and it's still on sale for 31% off. It had hit a record-low price of $289.99 on Cyber Monday so this isn't the cheapest we've seen it but given bundles still on offer with Amazon's Fire TV soundbar, we still think it's worth highlighting. You get 4K Ultra-HD resolution, smart capabilities with the Fire TV operating system, and a voice remote with hands-free Alexa, so you can use your voice to control your TV.View Deal

LG A2 48-inch OLED TV: was $1,299.99 now $599.99 at Best Buy
Best Buy had the 48-inch LG A2 OLED TV on sale for a record-low price of $549.99 on Cyber Monday and while that has since crept up, it's still offering a $700 saving. Named as one of our best OLED TVs and rated four out of five stars in our LG A2 review, it packs an Alpha α7 Gen5 processor that delivers sharp images and great upscaling from HDR, and Dolby Vision HDR support makes the most of movies and TV. LG's smart software is also excellent, and the included Magic remote allows you to navigate your TV seamlessly.View Deal

Sony X90K 75-inch 4K TV: was $1,499 now $898 at Walmart
This is a lot of very high-quality TV for the price! It's a 2022 TV, but its image processing is excellent, which is what you need when blowing up an image across a big 75-inch screen. It's also got an excellent panel, so you'll get uniform and bright images over the whole thing. It's also got the latest gaming features, including special 'Perfect for PS5' features that only Sony TVs offer.View Deal

Samsung S90C 65-inch 4K OLED TV: was $2,599 now $1,599 at Samsung
The S90C OLED is the slightly more budget-friendly cousin to the S95C, and now it's $1,000 off at Samsung for Cyber Monday. Don't be mistaken in thinking this is the inferior set, however, as it's our top pick for this year's best TV in the TechRadar Choice Awards. Our Samsung S90C review awarded it five stars out of five, praising its gorgeous picture and gaming features. It's not as bright as the 95C and its sound is also a little weaker, but it's a fantastic choice in its own right that will satisfy all your TV needs: be that shows, movies or gaming.View Deal

Best post-Cyber Monday TV deals in the UK

Samsung CU8500 43-inch 4K TV: was £649 now £379 with half-price soundbar offer at Very
This TV is essentially the same as the Samsung CU8000, which got a positive review from us for its rich colours and excellent 4K detail, plus its strong smart TV software. The really juicy deal here is not only the TV, but that Very is offering a half-price Samsung soundbar with it. We'd recommend the Samsung HT-C430 (£199 at Very), which is the right size for this 43-inch TV, and would cost just £99 with this deal, so you'd pay under £500 for both the TV and a big, powerful audio upgrade. Details of this offer are in the TV's description page on Very.View Deal

LG 55-inch G3 4K OLED TV: was £2,599 now £1,499 at PRC Direct
A slim, elegant TV designed to be wall-mounted, the LG G3 is LG's brightest ever OLED thanks to MLA technology. Vivid colors and rich contrast combine to create a stunning picture. The G3 also has all the gaming features you could need as well. This is actually cheaper than what we saw it for on Cyber Monday, so be sure to grab this while you can!View Deal

TCL QM8B 55-inch mini-LED TV: was £799 now £649 at Amazon
A good-size TV with mini-LED for ultra-bright images and better contrast, for under £700? This is quite the value package, especially since it comes with QLED tech for richer colours, and 4K 120Hz and VRR support for gaming. We haven't tested this variant of this model, but given how good TCL's bang for the buck is in its mini-LED TVs generally, it looks like a great deal.View Deal

Samsung 55-inch S90C QD-OLED TV: was £2,099 now £1,189 at PRC Direct
The Samsung S90C finds itself at the top of the best OLED TVs list, offering the stunning picture, gaming performance and sound quality of its more premium sibling the Samsung S95C, but for a fraction of the cost. You get everything you'll need in a TV with this one, and it's a great price – though we have seen it drop £200 lower over Black Friday and Cyber Monday thanks to a cashback offer. The price we've listed includes two free Blu-Ray films worth £30 too. View Deal

These are some of the best TV deals I've seen that are still available. Starting in the US, we have the Amazon Fire TV 4-series, which gives you a 4K, smart TV picture in a 50-inch size for under $250. Next is the 48-inch LG A2, which sits on our list of the best OLED TVs as the most affordable OLED. It gives you access to OLED technology for under $550, which is a no-brainer in my opinion.

I'd also highlight the Sony X90K, which has deep black levels and rich, accurate color in a 75-inch size for $898. This is seriously good value for a Sony TV of this size and model. Finally, there's the 65-inch Samsung S90C, which is a stunning TV and it won our TV of the Year at the TechRadar Choice Awards, thanks to its glorious picture, gaming performance and attractive design.

In the UK, the 43-inch Samsung CU8500 is not only a cheap £379 for Samsung's mid-range LED, but it also comes with a half-price soundbar offer to boost the sound. There's also the LG G3, which we rate as the best LG TV for picture quality. One of our gripes when we reviewed it was that it wasn't as good value as other brands on the market but now that this surprise deal has become available (it's now cheaper than when we saw it in Cyber Monday), we have to reconsider.

Next is the TCL QM8, a budget mini-LED TV that offered an incredible 2321 nits of peak brightness when we measured the 65-inch version in our review. This deal on the 55-inch set means you get it for under £650, which is an amazing deal for TCL. Finally, there's the 55-inch version of the Samsung S90C, which we talked about above, but this deal in the UK sees it at its lowest ever price of £1,089 (after a cashback claim).
