Nvidia RTX 5090 rumors continue to suggest this graphics card will not just be powerful, but also somehow miraculously slim

Nvidia’s incoming RTX 5090 has set tongues wagging again on the topic of how slim the next-gen flagship might just be.

VideoCardz noticed that Kopite7kimi, a regular on X (formerly Twitter) for GPU leaks, chipped in with another post that claims Nvidia’s version of the RTX 5090 (the Founders Edition) will be a two-slot graphics card.

While you might think that’s not exactly slim as such, it definitely is for a flagship GPU. The RTX 4090 spans three or more slots, eating up huge amounts of space inside the case of the PC it’s installed in.

The leaker further elaborates that the RTX 5090 will be a dual-fan card, so we’re looking at a two-slot cooler with two fans to keep the temperatures of the Blackwell flagship GPU in check.

Analysis: Efficiency in spades

For those who follow heavyweight GPUs, this rumor might be a difficult one to believe – and of course, we should exercise plenty of skepticism here (that’s true of any pre-release speculation).

However, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a slimmer RTX 5090, apparently due to a very different design approach Nvidia is taking with the flagship graphics card this time around. The source of that rumor mentioned a dual-slot cooling solution already (and that 32GB of VRAM might be the memory configuration for the 5090).

As we’ve noted before, with the RTX 5090 expected to make a big performance leap, this does beg the question of how much power it’ll use – and how good the cooling will have to be if it’s going to be a more compact solution in the next-gen flagship.

Kopite7kimi wouldn’t comment on the potential power usage of the RTX 5090, but does say: “I am sure the cooling design is more efficient.” This is certainly piquing our interest, as not only might the RTX 5090 forge ahead with gaming GPU performance, but it could also do that while being slimmed down – by a lot. This would fix one of our biggest issues with the RTX 4090 – namely, being able to fit the hulking thing into a PC case that isn’t the size of an aircraft hanger.

Does all this sound too good to be true? Well, to be fair it does, but we’ll just have to wait and see, though we may be in for a longer wait than is ideal, as the RTX 5080 might be the first Blackwell GPU to be released if the grapevine is correct. (That said, the RTX 5090 may not be far behind even in this eventuality).

Jaw-dropping 256-core CPU will debut in 2025 as Arm partner turns heat up on AMD and Nvidia — Ampere conspicuously leaves Intel out of equation as it claims CPU leadership ahead of Epyc

Having debuted its AmpereOne processor in 2023, revealing a powerhouse CPU with up to 192 single-threaded cores, the highest in the industry, Ampere is now preparing an updated version to arrive in 2025, it has revealed

The company's annual Strategy & Roadmap Update video (which you can watch below) reveals more on its future plans, including that the next generation of AmpereOne will be fabricated on a 3nm process node (its predecessor is 5nm) and have up to 256 cores and 12-channel DDR5 memory.

“We're in an extreme hype cycle on AI," RenĂ©e James, Ampere's Founder and CEO said in the video. "This is evidenced by the near-panic purchasing of GPU capacity at the expense of all other forms of data compute. This too shall pass. All hype cycles adjust back to a new normal… At Ampere, we're working hard to enable and build products for that phase of the new normal, the next decade of AI compute.”

40 percent more performance than other CPUs

James says Ampere is “extending our product family to include a new 256-core product that delivers 40 percent more performance than any other CPU in the market” but it’s not just about cores. There are several new features that the company says will “enable efficient performance, memory, caching, and AI compute”. The future chip will use the same air-cooled thermal solution as the current one does.

Ampere has compared its CPUs to Nvidia’s aging A10 GPU for AI inference, showing how it can run LLM models efficiently and use less power. This is a big area for Ampere which announced, as part of its roadmap update, that it is working with Qualcomm to develop a joint solution for AI inferencing using Qualcomm's Cloud AI 100.

The company also claims that AmpereOne offers higher performance per watt than AMD's EPYC "Bergamo". However, as Serve The Home points out, “Ampere is using an estimated score for its part and also de-rating the AMD EPYC Bergamo performance normalizing it to GCC 13 performance.”

YouTube's terrible free games are now available to everyone, here's how to play them

Over the past few months, a select group of people have been able to play games on YouTube, and now the feature has rolled out to everyone – but take it from me, they’re not worth your time.

Called ‘Playables, ’ YouTube has rolled out 75 titles today per its blog post announcement, all of which can be played for free in the mobile app or on your desktop. Plus, when you quit out of them, if you ever decide to return your progress will have been saved so you can pick up where you left off.

I’ve been trying some of the Playables for research (and definitely not as a way to avoid work) but found none were that fun. They’re mindless ways to burn through 10 minutes or so if you’re desperately bored, but if you’re on YouTube, there are literally millions of more entertaining ways to spend your time on the social media platform (like my recent obsession Jet lag: The Game, or watching The TechRadar Podcast)

Admittedly, Cut The Rope is a charming trip down memory lane with a classic smartphone app, but many other games are those mindless ‘puzzle’ games you see in TikToks or YouTube Shorts. After a minute, they lose all appeal.

It’s certainly nothing close to matching the quality of the Netflix games catalog – though I guess you are paying for those titles as part of a subscription so you should expect them to be higher quality.

Here’s how you can find YouTube’s games

The YouTube Playables menu, showing games like Cut The Rope and Draw Climber

If you’re still interested in finding YouTube’s new games here’s how.

On desktop, head to the YouTube homepage and scroll through the menu on the left side of the screen until you find the Explore section. At the bottom of this submenu, you should see ‘Playables,’ click on it and you’ll have found the games you seek.

On the mobile app, you'll also hit the compass symbol in the top right corner on the homepage. From here, tap on playables at the bottom of the menu, and you’ll find them.

On either platform, you’ll first load into the home menu, which shows you a few games, but clicking ‘browse’ will show you everything YouTube has to offer.

Apple's WWDC 2024 invite reveals when to tune in for its big iOS 18 and AI reveals

We’ve already had our calendars marked for June 10 through 14 for Apple’s 2024 WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference), but now we have official invites for the special event and a confirmed start time.

Apple just sent out invites to the press confirming the WWDC 2024 special event will kick off at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST on June 10 (3am AEST, June 11). Unlike previous Apple event invites – including the May 7 “Let Loose” event – this WWDC invite lacks a tagline and has a simpler design. However, there is a return to classic Apple form as the event kicks off at the often-used 10am PT time.

Apple WWDC 2024 Special Event Invite

The invite features a glowing circle of blue, pink, purple, and yellowish-orange hues. Wondering why a circle? Well, it pretty much matches the overall shape of the main ring building at Apple Park, the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, CA. There is a thicker row, then a thinner one, and lastly, a thicker one with the center open, displaying the WWDC 24 logo. The colors match the original logo shared back in March 2024 by Apple.

This could be a nod to the in-person event for media and developers at Apple Park, but it might hint at an all-encompassing rollout for Apple’s rumored AI feature set.

In addition to the special event invites, Apple also shared a new main image for WWDC and updated its developer website. Both depict a version of the "Swift" logo with a holographic color scheme, but only the developer version has a tagline attached: "Coming in swiftly."

Apple WWDC 2024

Alongside the next generations of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS, we expect Apple to debut its overarching approach to AI. We recently saw Apple add AI-infused and -powered features to Logic Pro for iPad and Mac, but WWDC 2024 will be different.

After OpenAI debuted ChatGPT-4o, Google showed off Project Astra, and Microsoft unveiled AI PCs, all eyes are now on Apple to deliver and impress on this front. It could be an LLM that runs on-device, with genuinely useful features for all the core applications, such as new photo editing tools or summarization tools across mail, calendar, and even phone. I hope we get transcription built into Voice Memos, at the minimum.

@techradar ♬ The Champion - Lux-Inspira

Specific to iOS 18, we expect more customization options for the home screen, smart summaries across nearly all applications, AI-generated emojis, and vastly improved searches. All of these were detailed in a fresh report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, which sets out the new AI features to expect in iOS 18. We may also see Apple speak to its in-house-developed AI models and potentially LLMs that could integrate with a partner like OpenAI to bake ChatGPT into the operating system.

Whatever route it takes, we can expect the company to highlight the fact that a good portion of this will be processed securely and privately on-device, versus being sent off to the cloud. After all, the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) built into Apple’s A-series and M-series silicon chips should be more than capable of handling these tasks.

Considering Apple refreshed the MacBook Air with the M3 chip in March and just debuted the M4 chip in the new iPad Pro earlier this month (check out our iPad Pro 13 (2024) review for our verdict), it might be too early to see additional hardware. However, there is always the possibility that Apple will revealed souped-up versions of these chips in a Mac, such as the Mac Studio or Mac Pro.

If you're looking for a new iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, or even a next-generation Vision Pro, those are likely all coming later. We could see Apple use WWDC 2024 as the event to announce the Vision Pro's international rollout, though.

Either route, time will tell on all this, and at least we know when we should all be tuning in – 10am PT / 1pm ET on June 10, 2024, to watch Apple unveil it all from Apple Park. TechRadar will be on the ground, so stay tuned for full coverage. In the meantime, check out our guide on how to watch WWDC 2024 so you don't miss a thing.

China says it will use more tech to clamp down on online counterfeits

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has announced plans to use technology in its big to intensify crackdowns on counterfeits and improve IP protection.

The pledge, made by SAMR official Tong Bo (via China Daily), came amid discussions surrounding the administration’s efforts to protect against IP violations.

Bo stated that SAMR is “aiming to improve our capability of finding and identifying IP violations” by using technologies like cloud computing and mobile networks in order to assist in identifying IP violations.

China clamps down on IP violations

Last June, SAMR launched a major crackdown on online IP infringements together with the Ministry of Public Security and the China National Intellectual Property Administration. The initiative was designed to regulate the market and ensure that internet platforms were fulfilling their regulatory responsibilities.

Since then, according to Bo, more than 27,000 online IP infringement cases have been produced, with 267 referred to public security bureaus for further investigations.

Bo also noted that 1,374 websites involved in such activities have been shut down, and a further 7,390 online shops have been ordered to cease platform services after being found in violation of regulations.

Emphasizing that the efforts are ongoing, Bo stated that the regulator has continued to intensify its efforts to protect IP and combat counterfeits, alluding to the fact that the administration’s job isn’t finished and that more could be done to address the issue.

The SAMR’s enhanced focus on integrating technology into its law enforcement strategies signifies China’s commitment to safeguarding its markets, however the initial early information lacks any mention of artificial intelligence.

The Republic has been subject to numerous restrictions and bans from the likes of the US over importing and exporting computing components like processors, which play a big role in the rollout of AI. In response to global geopolitical tensions, China has now turned its attention to developing its own products.

Quordle today – hints and answers for Tuesday, May 28 (game #855)

Tuesday's Quordle is not too taxing within the realms of Quordle – which means it's potentially still quite difficult. I'm not sure any Quordle could be described as easy, frankly! If you get a little stuck, you'll find some hints below to help you out.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about Quordle today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers.

Quordle today (game #855) - hint #1 - Vowels

How many different vowels are in Quordle today?

The number of different vowels in Quordle today is 4*.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #855, are…

  • MARRY
  • DUTCH
  • BRINE
  • TACIT

Nothing major to worry about here. Yes, there are a couple of repeated letters (in MARRY and TACIT), but so long as you have a sensible strategy you should be fine. Mine is to play three set start words, STARE, DOILY and PUNCH, which between them use 15 of the most common letters in the game. That usually gets my game going pretty well, and indeed it did today: I already had 16 of the 20 letters I needed, including eight greens. Solving the words was pretty much a case of just filling in the blanks, which I did with two guesses remaining.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Hackers hijack Arc browser Windows launch with malvertising campaign

Hackers are taking advantage of the Windows launch of Arc browser to trick victims into downloading malware.

Arc is a relatively new internet browser, first launched for macOS in the summer of 2023 - and initial feedback from both media and the users was positive enough to prompt the release of a Windows version too.

However, at the same time, unidentified hackers were creating websites with typosquatted domains, seemingly identical to the browser’s actual website. They were also creating ads on Google which, due to certain problems the network has, displayed the legitimate website, but redirected people to the typosquatted one.

Spotting bad ads

This meant customers who wanted to install Arc on their Windows device, and had used Google to search for it, would find an ad in the very top of Google’s search results page.

The ad seemingly pointed to the site’s actual website, but led the victims to a malicious site which offered an infected version of the browser’s installer, hosted on MEGA, for download.

Anyone who downloaded this installer would get the browser, but also malware which, according to initial reports, seems to be an infostealer, although confirmation on the malware’s nature is still pending.

Hackers are always taking advantage of major events and product launches to try and trick people into giving away sensitive data, or downloading malware. Events such as the FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games, Chat-GPT launch, Windows 11 launch, and others, have all been abused in the past to deliver bad code to people.

The best way to protect against these attacks is to always type the website address into the browser, instead of “just googling” it. If you don’t know the site, be mindful of the search engine results, and always double-check the characters in the address bar before downloading anything.

Want to shove 30 GPUs in a computer system? Here's an AI solution that will work as long as you are using Dell — Liqid allows one R760 server to connect to a whopping 30 Nvidia GPUs for now with AMD and Intel likely soon

Composable infrastructure firm Liqid has created a cost-effective and scalable solution for organizations looking to deploy high-performance inference capabilities in their data centers.

Unveiled at Dell Technologies World 2024, the UltraStack 30 crams a whopping thirty Nvidia L40S GPUs into a single Dell PowerEdge R760 server.

Liqid previously released a technical whitepaper for its UltraStack server at Nvidia GTC 2024 and at that time it had only managed to jam up to 20 Nvidia L40S into a PowerEdge server, so that's quite a leap in a short amount of time.

AMD and Intel support coming

Nvidia L40S GPUs have fewer cores and are generally less powerful than Nvidia’s H100 and A100 accelerators, as well as the newer Blackwell GB200 and B200 systems. However, they are well-suited for a variety of high-performance tasks, including AI, data analytics, and 3D rendering. This makes them a versatile choice for modern data centers and professional workloads, and they are cheaper too. L40S typically cost $7,000 to $8,000, compared to H100s which can go for $25,000 to $30,000.

The UltraStack 30 offers enhanced enterprise-level GPU infrastructure capabilities and builds on previous solutions, with improvements in operations per second and total cost of ownership compared to similar GPU density solutions. It also boasts an energy efficient design capable of delivering high-performance while reducing power consumption and operational costs.

This is just the start, and the company has big plans for the UltraStack 30. Sumit Puri, Liqid co-founder and chief strategy officer, noted, “As we move forward, we recognize that optimal memory bandwidth will be crucial for maximizing performance. This is why composableCXL (Compute Express Link) is on the horizon at Liqid, promising to further enhance our capabilities in delivering high-performance, low-latency solutions.”

Blocks & Files adds, “Our understanding is that Liqid can support GPUs and other accelerators from suppliers such as AMD and Intel. It is also aware of the possibility of marketing its SmartStack and UltraStack technologies to MSPs that wish to supply GPUs for rent.”

The start of another week brings the chance to keep your Quordle streak going, or to restart it if you lost it yesterday. But be warned: today's Quordle is potentially difficult. If you get stuck, you might find my hints to be helpful.

The answers to today's Quordle, game #854, are…

  • PHOTO
  • LURID
  • PURGE
  • EMCEE

EMCEE is that rare word that contains three of the same letters. I don't have details for every Quordle answer to say just how uncommon that is, but my analysis of every Wordle answer – which is likely to be very similar to the details for Quordle – shows that it happens a mere 20 times in the game's 2,309 original solutions. So, very rare.

Ironically, I solved EMCEE without any issues, but lost a guess on PURGE; for some reason I guessed PUREE first. That proved to be very helpful, though, because even though it was wrong, it gave me the double-E at the end of EMCEE. Lucky!

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.
